Gavin Pope Obituary

Gavin Shannon Pope Delton Gavin Shannon Pope died suddenly at his residence in Delton, Michigan on March 7, 2008. Mr. Pope was born on December 29, 1948 in Tokyo, Japan. As the son of an enlisted United States Army Colonel, Gavin lived in both the far East and Europe and experienced many different cultures while growing up. He graduated from Lakeview High School in Battle Creek in 1966, and then attended Western Michigan University, where he earned both undergraduate and graduate degrees. Gavin was a man of various vocations and avocations. He taught microbiology at Western Michigan and engaged in field research in Saudi Arabia. He also was a wine enthusiast and turned his knowledge and fondness for the subject into a career, selling fine wine to individuals and businesses. Later in life he became a self-taught computer analyst, and worked as an independent computer consultant for various non-profit organizations. Besides having an appreciation for fine wine, Mr. Pope was also a gourmet cook. He also enjoyed gardening, music, photography, the company of his two pet cats, and good times with good friends. His final years were spent in ill health, but he now rests in peace where worldly concerns can no longer intrude. Mr. Pope was preceded in death by his parents, Cornell and Helen Pope, and brother Cornell V. "Skip" Pope. He is survived by an aunt, two uncles, a cousin, and many loving friends. A graveside service will be held at the Cedar Creek Cemetery, Hope Township, Delton, MI on Saturday, October 25, 2008 at 11:00 a.m. Those wishing to memorialize Mr. Pope should consider making a contribution in his name to Prevention Network, PO. Box 4458, East Lansing, Michigan 48826. Arrangements are by the Girrbach Funeral Home in Hastings. You may leave a message or memory to the family at girrbachfuneralhome.net
