Carl Wirth Obituary

Carl C. Wirth Marshall Carl C. Wirth, 88, of Marshall, formerly of Battle Creek, died Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at Oaklawn Hospital. He was born on January 21, 1920 in Louisville, NE to Harry and Emma (Graham) Wirth. Carl graduated from Peru State College in Peru, NE and received his master's degree from the University of Nebraska. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WWII and retired from the Air Force Reserves as a Lt. Colonel in 1980. He married Lois L. Wagoner on October 14, 1944 in Dayton, Ohio; she preceded him in death in 1995. Carl taught mathematics at W.K. Kellogg Junior High School from 1954 to 1964, and then at Battle Creek High School from 1964 until he retired in 1980. He is survived by sons, Douglas A. (Connie) Wirth, of Marshall, Steve L. (June) Wirth, of Rochester, NY, and Mark Wirth, of Sierra Madre, CA; eight grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and his special friend, Florence Moren. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Gail Wirth. Carl was a member of Christ United Methodist Church. He enjoyed gardening, traveling, and spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Family will receive friends from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home where funeral services will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Carolyn Robinson-Fisher of Christ United Methodist Church officiating. Interment will be 11:00 a.m. Monday at Ft. Custer National Cemetery with Military Honors. Memorial contributions may be given to Alzheimer's Association.

Mr. Wirth was an excellent math teacher and a wonderful person. His calm personality and dedication to teaching made a major difference in my life and the the lives of many students who found math to be a challenging subject. My deepest sympathy goes out to his family.

I am so sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Wirth. I knew him from W.K. and BCCHS as a teacher and from church where he was a family friend. I graduated with Doug and have know the family for a long time. My prayers are with you.

My prayers are with the family of Mr. Wirth. I was a student of his at Battle Creek Central. He was an outstanding math teacher. I was pleasantly surprised one day when he remember me many years after I had graduated and he had retired. He was a very special man as I know you, his family already know this.
