Hazel R. Rogers

Hazel R. Rogers Battle Creek Hazel R. Rogers, 85, of Battle Creek, died Saturday, October 25, 2008 at home. Hazel was born June 14, 1923 in Coleman, Michigan to Levi and Estella (Gross) King. She graduated from Coleman High School in 1941 and St. Mary's School of Nursing in Saginaw in 1945. She was a registered nurse at Percy Jones Hospital, Leila Hospital and an occupational health nurse at Battle Creek's Federal Center for 26 years, retiring in 1989. Hazel was a founding member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church and enjoyed sewing, needlecraft, garage sales, gardening, bingo and being with her grandchildren. She started a Listen to your Heart program for early elementary students to promote healthy hearts. Hazel married Vernon C. Rogers on July 18, 1948. He died April 14, 1997. Surviving are sons, Kim Rogers and Keith (Deeanne) Rogers of Battle Creek; daughters, LaNeta VanDenOever and LaSondra (Tim) Wetherill of Battle Creek; nine grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and sister, Mercedes Watson of Dearborn. Hazel was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Vernon; son, Kyle Rogers; daughter, LaVonna Smith; sisters, Grace King, Gladys King, Blanche Jones; and brothers, Walter, Luther and Robert King. The family will receive friends at Shaw Funeral Home Wednesday, October 29, 2008 from 2:00-4:00 and 6:00-8:00 p.m. Funeral services will take place 1:00 p.m. Thursday, October 30, 2008 at St. Mark's Lutheran Church with Pastor Carl Schneider officiating.
