Ernest Webber Obituary

Ernest J.L. Webber Battle Creek Ernest J. L. Webber, 95 of Battle Creek passed away Monday February 2, 2009 at home. He was born on March 31, 1913 in Battle Creek to George A. and Alice (McLocklin) Webber. Ernest graduated from Battle Creek Central High School in 1931. He married Irma M. Miller on September 12, 1936. He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in the signal corps. Ernest was employed by Kendall Industrial Supplies for 43 years retiring in 1978 as Vice-President and general manager. Surviving are his wife, Irma, of 72 years; a son, Russell J.L. Webber of Battle Creek; a daughter, Lavinia Sue Webber, of Battle Creek; grandsons, Scott M. Webber, of Durham, NC, and Todd A. Webber, of Battle Creek. He was a member of St. Thomas Episcopal Church. Ernest enjoyed boating Lake Michigan and various rivers. He also made models of boats, two of which are on display, one at the Grand Haven Museum and another in Port Edward, Canada. Family will receive friends from 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. A private family graveside will be held Thursday at Oak Hill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to Kambly Living Center or St. Thomas Episcopal Church.

Dear Irma, Russ, Kate, Sue and family:
It has been a couple days since we got the sad news about Ernie's passing, but you are much in our minds and hearts. Ernie was such a special uncle to me and my brother, Dick. We always looked forward to visits because he liked to do "fun" things with us. As kids, we looked forward to boat rides on Goguac Lake with him and, of course, seeing the wonderful model ships and other things he built. As I recall, one beautiful yacht he made was even named "The Bob-Dick." At Christmas time, when many other gifts to us were sweaters, shirts, etc., Ernie always made sure we got a real toy that boys would like to play with. Later on, we enjoyed being with him and you on Grand River houseboat trips. It was sad that he was not able to communicate well and enjoy much of life during the recent past, but he is now free from pain and limitations, and he will always be remembered for the warmth, caring, and joy he brought to so many. Hazel just phoned to tell me of your loss. I remember when you came to the funeral home when my mom (Marie) died. I had told Hazel then that I knew right away he was a Webber.

I remember my father, H.C. Eddy of Albion, who worked for Union Steel Products Company, speaking so very highly of Ernie Webber. My dad was in charge of the tool crib and had close contact with Ernie and Kendalls. My dad has been gone for nearly forty years but I still remember the name Ernie Webber and how well he was liked.
