Margaret Vandlen Obituary

Margaret Jean (Struin) Vandlen Battle Creek Margaret Jean (Struin) Vandlen, age 91, of Battle Creek, died Tuesday, February 17, 2009, at W Drive North Assisted Living. Margaret was born on February 10, 1918, in rural Barry County, the first of two children to William and Florence (Luce) Struin. She was a graduate of Battle Creek Central High School and of Argubright Business College. She married Verden D. Vandlen on March 29, 1941. He preceded her in death in September of 1999. Margaret was a lifelong member of Base Line United Methodist Church where she had been the treasurer of the United Methodist Women for many years. She was an avid gardener, a great cook and loved to raise chickens. For many years she sold produce and eggs from her home in rural Pennfield Township. The love of the Lord and her family and friends were her passion. She is survived by three sons, David (Janice) of Battle Creek, Richard (Mary) of Hillsborough, CA, and Gary (Sue) of Kalamazoo; 6 grandchildren and 5 great-grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth (Margie) Struin of Battle Creek; numerous nieces and nephews; and her special care-giver, Bobbi Easter and her staff of W Drive North Assisted Living. Visitation will be held Friday from 2 to 4:00 p.m. and 6 to 8:00 p.m. at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held 11:00 a.m., Saturday, February 21, 2009, at Base Line United Methodist Church with Pastor Glenn Wegner officiating. A graveside service will be held 10:30 a.m., Monday, February 23, 2009, at Fort Custer National Cemetery with Pastor Virginia Heller officiating. Memorials may be made to the Base Line United Methodist Church.
