Dorothy McKenzie Obituary

Dorothy Caroline (Ling) McKenzie Dorothy Caroline (Ling) McKenzie, 96, formerly of Battle Creek, died Sunday, October 18, 2009 in Centerville, Ohio. She was born January 7, 1913 in Loup City, Nebraska, the daughter of James Nathan and Katie Caroline Ling. After graduating from Loup City High School, she moved to Illinois, where she met and married Boyd C. McKenzie on August 16, 1936. They moved to Battle Creek in the early 40's. Dorothy began employment in an accounting office. As a wife and mother she also attended Kellogg Community College and Western Michigan University, obtaining a teaching degree and graduating with honors (magna cum laude). She taught at Riverside Elementary in Lakeview and Woodlawn Preschool for 15 years each. Reading and animals were passions of hers. She was a member of St. Mark's Lutheran Church. Survivors include children: Clayton (Lynda) McKenzie of Las Vegas, Nevada; Katie Shafer of Centerville, Ohio and David McKenzie of Battle Creek; grandchildren: Matthew McKenzie, Joshua (Glenda) McKenzie of Nevada, Shannon (Steve) Walker of Georgia, Caroline (Tim) Shea of Colorado; great-grandchildren: Brody, McKenzie, Matthew, Eliza, Samuel, and Isabelle; and three nieces: Jackie Fross, Nancy Smith, and Kathryn Robbins. Preceding her in death were her husband, Boyd, in 1990 and four sisters: Cecile Fross, Kathryn Bolin, Mildred Reed, and Glayds Dietericks. A Memorial Service will be held 1:00 p.m. Saturday at the Richard A. Henry Funeral Home with Rev. Carl Schneider officiating. A private interment will be held at Memorial Park Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Lifespan-Good Samaritan Hospice, Hospice of Dayton, 324 Wilmington Ave. Dayton, Ohio 45420 or The American Cancer Society.

Your mother was a very special person, she was kind thoughtful and lived her life to the fullest. It's dificlult to lose a family member at any time. She will always be in our memories.
