Harvey Caldwell Obituary

Harvey D. Caldwell Bellevue, Michigan and La Paz, Indiana Harvey Dale Caldwell, 92, of Bellevue, Michigan and La Paz, Indiana, passed away suddenly on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 in Plymouth, Indiana. He was born December 1, 1917 in Springfield, Colorado to Harrison D. and Mary Ann (Loar) Caldwell. Harvey married Laura G. "Bug" Gardner nine days before Pearl Harbor in 1941. She preceded him in death in 1982. They made their home in Barry County where their doors, arms and hearts were open to all. They had three children who survive, Audrey Ann Caldwell, John Harvey Caldwell and Robert Joseph Caldwell all of Battle Creek whom they dearly loved. Harvey married Vivian A. Stump in La Paz in 1983. She died in 2007. In addition to his three children Harvey is survived by his three granddaughters, Elsie, Crystal and Savannah; sister, Ruth (Bill) Gann of Missouri; stepfather, Barney Neher; sister-in-law, Vivetta Gardner and a multitude of loving nieces and nephews. Harvey also leaves many special friends at Cornerstone Community Fellowship of La Paz , particularly Pastor Stephen and Karen Cox in whose home he spent his final weeks and a special couple, Tim and Valery St. Clair who spent much time with him. Harvey so appreciated his church family and the support they provided him. In addition to his wives, Laura and Vivian, he was preceded in death by his sister, Ellen and brother, Earl as well as many sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law. He will be sorely missed. He enjoyed traveling, fishing, hunting and gardening. Harvey worked for General Foods (Post Cereals, Battle Creek) for 33 years, retiring from the Carton and Container division in 1979. Harvey was a decorated veteran, serving in the U. S. Army during World War II and was discharged in 1945 as a sergeant. He served 1½years in Iceland and two years in Europe under General George Patton at the Battle of the Bulge. He served in the 7th Engineer Battalion, Company (B) from 1939 -1945 building bridges and clearing minefields. His decorations include: American Defense Service Ribbons, Good Conduct medals, Overseas Service Bars, Service Stripe European, African, Middle Eastern Theatre ribbon with four Bronze Battle Stars. He fought in the following battles: Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes and Rhineland. The family will receive friends from 5 until 7:00 p.m. Friday, January 15, 2010 at Shaw Funeral Home. Services will take place 11:00 a.m. Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the funeral home with Pastor Stephen Cox officiating. Interment, Union Cemetery, Maple Grove Township. Memorials may go to Cornerstone Fellowship of La Paz, Indiana. The family is being served by Shaw Funeral Home. www.shawfuneralhome.com
