Only just heard about Herb's passing - both shocked and saddened. We shared a love of music and traded tapes 'across the pond' relentlessly throughout the 80s/90s, finally meeting up when Herb came to stay with me and my family in Yorkshire in Feb. 1992, when we took in two Eric Clapton shows. I lost touch with him latterly, but pleased to know of the wonderful legacy he has left. God Bless.

Sometime in the early 1980's, Bob Rupp looks up from a newspaper to tell Herb that, on this date in 1492, Christopher Columbus first laid eyes on Hispaniola. Herb, looking out the window, replies,"Well, he sure picked a beautiful day for it." As a young loss prevention consultant trainee at FMEA, I appreciated both of these gentlemen for their generous assistance. I was shocked and saddened to discover Herb's untimely passing. But he left good memories with too many people to count.

Returning recently from a summer in Europe, I sat down to seriously start work on my photo-book about the Seventies.

Ten Years After came up, of course, and I googled Herb to find out what he was up to these days.
To my shock I learned that he has left us. Much too soon!

I have kept all our correspondence going back to 1999-2001, regarding Eric Clapton and Alvin Lee... and his TYA book. Last week I bought another copy...(Thanks, Claudia, for sending it so quickly)

My backstage photos are on pages 116-117, and Ric Lee on drums on page 118. Madison Square Garden, May 13, 1974.

Not so long, but it seems a lifetime ago!

RIP, Herb, you will be fondly remembered for your enthusiasm, honesty and sense of humour.

My heartfelt condolences to Claudia and all family and friends. I know Herb is missed daily.

Seems so odd that I just recently learned of Herb's passing. It only seems like yesterday that we were actively trading music material. I will definitely treasure the music, video and memorabilia Herb personally shared with me. Especially the shows he personally recorded. I have always admired Herb's impressive musical collection, generosity and friendliness! He was such a pro in my book.

Thanks for mentioning me in your TYA book too Herb! I will always be thankful to have corresponded with you. My sincere condolences to all family and friends.

I graduated with Herb from MMA in 1970 and didn't see him again until 2001 when I started attending biannual MA jurisdictional meetings. It was a pleasure to get reacquainted with Herb's big grin and warm handshake. We usually spent the meeting reminiscing those weird MMA years.

It was only several weeks ago when a co-worker of mine “jumped ship” to FM Global and informed me that Herb had passed away last year. Herbie was always physically fit and disciplined in all his endeavors, which makes his passing so difficult to understand.

Claudia, I’m very sorry for your loss…. Herb will always be missed and well remembered.

I, like many others I suspect, knew Herb well without actually meeting him!
Such was the very nature of the man.
Like many others, I was introduced to Herb by Alvin's mum, Dot.
We corresponded by post; phone; and eventually e-mail.
He sent me loads of TYA stuff, and I sent him lots of 'British' TYA stuff, which I was proud to see in his amazing book!
He will be sorely missed by all who 'knew' him, and my sincere condolences go to his immediate family and friends.

Sorry to be so late in expressing my deep sympathy over Herb's passing. We weren't in touch in recent years, but Herb - with his incredible knowledge of all thing Alvin Lee/Ten Years After and with his generous nature - was a lifeline to me when I first started the Alvin Lee Fan Club and later alvinlee.com. Anything I didn't know (and there was lots), Herb did, and he graciously supplied answers, information, articles, photos and music - and mostly, lots and lots of encouragement and support. How happy he must have been to have come to know the TYA members as friends, and I'm sure they had no greater or more dedicated one. I bet that right now, Herb is turning the angels on to his favorite band. Rock on, Herb. You'll be missed and remembered by all of Alvin and TYA's fellow fans.

Herb and I never got to meet face to face, but enjoyed periodic correspendence having been 'introduced' to each other by the mother of musician Alvin Lee in the late 1980's. He was one of the world's most knowledgable music fans, how he ever found the time to pursue his interests, I'll never know, but I used to call him 'Professor'. Herb was 'always there' and an integral part of the the international community of music fans, particularly Ten Years After and Alvin Lee. He'll be very much missed by us all. My sincere condolences to his family and friends.

Dear Staehr Family:
It is with great sadness in my heart that I sit down and write to you. Words cannot express how much Herb touched so many of us here at FM Global with his kindness, thoughtfulness and professionalism. I have fond memories of Herb and Bob Rupp (a dearly departed past retiree) making their daily rounds after lunch of the building and parking lot. The two of them were the “Stanley and Ollie” of FM…that’s what we called ourselves before the merger. Bob always had a joke to tell. Herb, with his dry sense of humor would standby and let Bob entertain us…then Herb would step in and add his input to the story…always making us laugh. They brought us so much joy and fellowship. I know when Herb crosses over to the other side Bob will be there to meet him and show him the way to the Kingdom of Heaven…Herb is now at peace, he is free from pain and illness; and his soul knows only joy and happiness.

God saw you getting tired and a cure was not to be, so He put His arms around you and whispered, “Come to me.” With tearful eyes we watched and saw you pass away, although we loved you dearly we couldn’t make you stay. A golden heart stopped beating, hard-working hands at rest. God broke our hearts to prove to us, He only takes the best.

I will miss a dear friend and colleague.

I remember Herb helping us rookies get through those long training weeks in Norwood. When I heard he went to that "other maritime academy" it was always a joy to do a little bit of needling which, like most maritime professisonals he took in stride and needled back. Herb epitomized my school's motto "Acta Non Verba" more than any other person I know. He always took the watch and could be counted on to do the right thing.

He will be missed significantly

I have known Herb at his place of employment (FM Global) for many, many years. To the extent that I knew him, words like gentleman, humble, intelligent, approachable, listener, and unassuming are appropriate. He did well what was needed in his work, and at the same time expected no special recognition or praise. He will be missed by all who knew him.

Herb,
It was an extreme pleasure to have worked with you all these years. I never heard anyone ever say anything but compliments on your work, your person and your humor. You left this world so quickly. I have nothing but good memories and hope there is a chance to cross paths again some day if I am so privileged. Thank you and God bless your soul.

To Herb's family,
As noted above, Herb was a wonderful person. I worked with him for 18 years and most closely in the early 90's when we were on project teams together. I always though of Herb as the ultimate FM'er in his B&M field. It was so enlightening to learn about his artistic side and a part I did not know. I spent an entire Saturday on the web researching Herb's other life outside FM and was totally amazed. It just happened to be the day he passed on to his next life. He will surely be missed. My condolences.

Stephen Rudnickas

January 25, 2008

I first met Herb at Massachusetts Maritime Academy in the summer of 1967. I was in my second year and Herb was starting his first or “Youngie” year. Later, he was in my watch section and while there was not a lot of fraternization between the first and second class, I remember him as being quiet and reserved, but always accomplishing the tasks assigned to him.

Herb went on to serve as an engineering officer aboard tankers in Texaco’s fleet and came to work for Factory Mutual Engineering and Research in 1973. I was fortunate to have Herb assigned to me for training during his first few months with the company and have either worked directly with him or in different departments since then.

So I can say that Herb and I stood a lot of watches together and I would like to think of Herb’s time with us as his “Watch”. A watch is simply a nautical term which means the time when you are on duty, responsible and in charge. You may have heard the phrase “not on my watch”. That simply means you will prevent bad things from happening while in charge. We can remember and proudly say that bad things did not happen on Herb’s watch. In fact, Herb was responsible for and contributed greatly to our industry and society while he was on duty. I would just like to highlight some of the items that were entered into the log book of Herb’s watch.

First and foremost, Herb was a great watch partner. He was caring, compassionate, competent and dependable. Most of all he had a wonderful sense of humor that showed itself everyday. Herb’s humor and timing had a way of taking the edge off difficult discussions and making things go smoother. He was the master of practical jokes, not mean or hurtful ones, but antics that would make everyone, even the victim, laugh to the point of tears. His sense of humor also showed itself sometimes in his impromptu cartoons. Even before we learned how to cut and paste electronically, Herb really did cut and paste paper material to make hilarious “editorial” cartoons or illustrations to bring humor to his colleagues.

Herb was very competent and respected greatly not only within FM Global, but within the boiler and pressure vessel inspection community. Whenever there was a task group, committee or team established within our company concerned with pressure equipment, Herb was always recruited. His understanding of the job, matter of fact approach and honest assessment were always valued. And his expertise and ability not only to represent FM Global but also the insurance industry was valued and sought by national organizations. To use that old advertisement for a financial company, it can be said that when Herb Staehr spoke, people listened.

Here are just a few of his accomplishments and contributions.

In the various positions he held in home office, he developed and implemented a number of basic and advanced training courses for our field engineers. He developed and implemented policies, procedures and tools that were used by field engineers to develop and report risk information. In his most recent position, he provided the leadership and guidance to continuously improve jurisdictional inspection and reporting of boilers and pressure vessels, benefiting the people he worked with, the jurisdictions he was associated with and the clients for which he provided service.

Herb was very influential in improving the law for inspection of air tanks in Massachusetts to allow use of modern technology and streamlining the process. Herb was honored by having the revised law be proclaimed “Herb’s Law”.

Herb served on many national organizations which developed engineering and inspection standards which protected property and improved public safety. The organizations involved large industries with complicated equipment. Some of those organizations are the Black Liquor Recovery Boiler Advisory Committee, the Technical Association of the Pulp and Paper Industry, and the National Association of Corrosion Engineers.

He also participated on various committees of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers Boiler and Pressure Vessel Code.

Perhaps one of his greatest contributions was his 20 years of service on the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors Inspection Code Committee. This committee develops and improves the fundamental processes and procedures for inspection of boilers and pressure vessels and is adopted in almost every state in the US and province of Canada. Continued participation on that committee is not automatic and his re-appointments are testament of the value the committee placed on Herb’s expertise. Herb recently received recognition by Mr. Donald Tanner, Executive Director of the National Board for his outstanding service and contributions to the committee.

The log book of Herb’s watch is filled with entries that have made us better for knowing and being associated with him. And his watch leaves a legacy of better engineering and safety standards which have and will continue to benefit all of society.

We will miss Herb’s presence on our watch. But I believe we can be comforted and strengthened knowing that God has called Herb to be His watch partner in a place where there is no more pain and suffering, where the sun and the stars always shine, where the wind is always fair and where the sea is always calm.

God Bless you, Herb

January 25, 2008

To the family of Herb Staehr:

Please accept my sincerest condolences on the loss of your son, brother and friend.

I worked with Herb at Factory Mutual. Herb and Kevin McTague and I were quite the trio. Herb was always the “quiet” one with the bellowing laugh. There were many occasions when the three of us would be involved in some sort of adventure beyond just the routine Code meetings. I smile when I recall Herb telling us about waking in his hotel room covered with one dollar bills in his bed after a successful night of liar’s poker! Or when he formed the anchor of a human chain to fish a friend’s wife out of the lagoon after a missed step caused her to tumble down the embankment (there are only three other people that know that story!).

Even with all the fun, we got the work done. Herb was quite the professional and he took his job very seriously. After all, he was in the business of loss prevention and safety. I recall more than once when the meeting took a tangent, Herb would look up from his notes and say “Hey, wait a minute...” and we did. Herb had a way of making his point without threat or raising his voice. When he spoke, I knew I had to listen because I was probably going to learn something. His work with the National Board and the jurisdictions, particularly in New England, is his legacy.

Herb’s all too brief life has made an impact on me, on our company and on the thousands of people who routinely depend on safe boilers and pressure equipment. He will be sorely missed.

Your humor was always a breath of fresh air and the lunch table won't ever be quite the same without you.

The respect an courtesy you extended to those around you was one of your many admirable qualities. Your positive influence on so many people meant more than you could ever imagine.

You will be missed!

My relationship with Herb dates back to May 1985 when I first met him. He was the instructor of my National Board Review class.Herb’s monotone voice and dry sense of humor (dry as a “popcorn fart” to quote one of his zingers) was something that took some getting used to at first, but it didn’t take long to realize that this man was dedicated to his job in a very balanced way that made working with him and for him both enjoyable and entertaining. I passed my National Board exam the first time around, largely because of the way Herb prepared me for it.
Since then I can’t recall a conversation that I had with Herb that didn’t make me laugh and at the same time resolved my issue promptly. Herb was also a great teacher. He had a unique gift of distilling complicated ideas down to the least common denominator. He made learning fun. This is a quality that I admired in him and will miss terribly! To Herb, “You have made my career at FM Global an enjoyable one! You will always be remembered in a very special way in my thoughts. FM Global has lost a tremendous human being and a great Engineer. God Speed my good friend.”

Herb's family
I am so sorry for your loss. I will certainly miss his smiling face and great stories about all of you. I will also miss his great e-mail jokes.
God Bless Herb, see you on the other side!

My sympathy to the Staehr family for their loss. I am amazed at the friends that Herb had worldwide and have gone on Herb's Website, the Alvin Lee website and the TYA site. Herb was a quiet neighbor here at FM, but he had a great sense of humor. We'll miss you Herb. As a tribute to you, I am going to buy your book and buy some Alvin Lee and TYA CD's. We will also have a few buckets of beer at Lewis' in Norwood in your honor.

Dear Herb,

What can I say about a good friend whom I never even met? I've enjoyed our friendship and experiences re TYA these past few years and getting to know your love of travel, news of your mother, the weather on the east coast and other "mundane" items we spoke about. How precious those memories are.

You have so generously shared your time, knowledge and items from various concerts with me. I treasure them even more, as they provide a lasting memory of having known a sweet and generous man. Rest easy in God's arms, Herb and keep checking in on TYA's music and concerts from time to time. We will all feel your presence and remember your smiling face. Jan Jones

Like a lot of TYA fans, I had never met Herb in person but had lots of email contact with him and he was exactly as so many other people have said - warm, friendly and generous with a huge sense of humour. A real gentleman who will be geatly missed. Sincere condolences to all his family and friends.

Je ne connaissais pas Herb personnellement mais seulement au travers de son travail concernant Alvin Lee & Ten Years After. Il était devenu une légende. C'est une perte inestimable.
Mes très sincères condoléances à sa famille.
