Helene Hayek Obituary

HAYEK, Helene (nee Garraway) April 19, 1965 June 6, 2008 Helene passed away peacefully with her family by her side after a courageous two month battle with cancer. She was predeceased by her mother Helen Garraway. She is survived by her loving husband George Hayek, daughters Abigail and Rebecca, father Lyle Garraway (Mary), twin sister Renee Kelly (Paul), and brothers Dale and Bernard Garraway and Neil Antolin (Karen). Helene was born and raised in Victoria. After graduating from Mt. Doug, she completed her B.A. in French at UVic. To further her experience in the French language she studied in Chicoutimi and Trois Rivieres before completing her teacher training at Laval in Quebec City. She returned to Victoria where she taught at Willows Elementary, Shawnigan Lake Secondary and Pacific Christian Secondary. She then chose to become a full time mother and had wonderful years with four year old Abigail and one year old Rebecca. During her illness the strong Christian faith of both Helene and George carried them through this traumatic period. The family would like to thank everyone who assisted during Helene's illness. Special thanks go to Karen Haas from Brampton and Maria Tomolo from Montreal, Helene's long time friends, who flew out to be with Helene and George. Our family has the highest praise and deepest thanks for the doctors, nurses and support staff at the Royal Jubilee Hospital Oncology Department, the Beacon support services and Victoria Hospice. A private family burial service will take place on Wednesday, June 11th at 11:00 a.m. at Royal Oak Burial Park to be followed by a public memorial service at Glad Tidings Church, 1800 Quadra Street, Victoria on Saturday, June 21st at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, donations in Helene's memory may be made to Victoria Hospice or The Canadian Red Cross. I heard the news today and it came as quite a shock. Helene was such a beautiful, sweet, funny, sincere, loving person. I met her at Lambrick Church years ago and the last time I saw her was bike riding with George, and she showed me her engagement ring - she was beaming!!! I'm so happy to hear she got married and had two beautiful daughters. I'm sure she continued to beam over them too!!! Such a shame to lose a wonderful mother. I'm sure she will be guiding from above:) God bless you all -- George, Abigail and Rebecca, other family and friends.
Sincerely, Val.

I got to know Helene and George a bit while attending GT with them several years ago. I had the honour and privilege of singing at their wedding, and she was such a beautiful person. I know she will be missed greatly. I will be praying for you, George, and your girls... as you face the difficult times ahead. I pray that you will rest in God's everlasting arms and find peace and comfort in knowing that Helene is with her Saviour.

Helene was my French teacher in grade twelve, but in a class of 6 girls, she was more like a friend to all of us. She took great care in our success in the French language. During that semester, we experienced our French studies at Starbucks, over pizza before the exam, and we served crepes to our family and loved ones. 6 years later, I am living and working and loving in French language, and I want to become a teacher like Helene, to share my passion for language with others. She changed my life. I am sorry I never told her how much.
We were lucky enough to be her students the semester that she met her husband.
I will remember Helene for her kindness, her courage, her sweet, youthful spirit, how she cared for us on a personal level and prayed with us. I will hold her in my heart as an inspiration in my life's journey.

I worked with Helene many years ago at Fable Cottage - we shared many memories about this when we met again several years ago by co-incidence. I am so saddened by this news and send my sincerest condolences to the entire family.

We praise the Lord for Helene's and your faith. It has been an inspiration for us all. We know that Helene has gone on ahead of us to paradise and we look forward to the day when we will join her there but for now she will be missed.
