Harold Kermode Obituary

KERMODE, Harold Douglas July 18, 1922 August 19, 2009 Harry, a true gentleman, sportsman and devoted family man passed away peacefully at home with his loving family at his side. He will be greatly missed by his dear wife of 54 years, Millie, his beloved children, Barbara (Sab), Jennifer (John), Susan (Michael). and Jeffrey (Allison), and his cherished grandchildren, Conor, Alexander, Sophie, Emma and Genna. He is also survived by his sister, Ruth Garton, and brothers, Jack (Ruth) and Ernie. Harry spent his early childhood in Victoria where his enthusiasm for all outdoor pursuits began with soccer. After graduating from University Hill High School he began his Forestry Engineering degree at UBC where he played basketball for the Thunderbirds. These studies were interrupted when he joined the Canadian Air Force to train as a pilot. Upon returning to UBC, he played on the victorious Thunderbirds teams and represented Canada at the 1948 Olympics in London, England. He was later inducted into the BC Sports Hall of Fame for basketball. After basketball his interest turned to golf and tennis, but his greatest passion became tennis. He was a keen study of all sports and he passed on that enthusiasm and knowledge as a coach and fan to his children, grandchildren and friends. He truly believed that "Life is like a tennis game~ you can't win without serving." A Life Member of the Professional Foresters of B.C. and Professional Engineers of B.C., he enjoyed a rewarding career in the province's forest industry. Harry's entire family is grateful to the special care provided by the Vancouver Home Hospice and Vancouver Hospital Palliative Care Services. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation to either of these services. A memorial service will be held at St. Mary's Kerrisdale Anglican Church, 2490 West 37th Avenue, Vancouver at 2pm on Wednesday, August 26th, with a reception to follow at the Vancouver Lawn Tennis and Badminton Club. Dear Millie & Family,

I am so sorry to hear of Harry's passing. To me he was a coach, mentor, and tennis partner when I was a teenager living on Arbutus.
He taught me much more than tennis during our time together. There was always some philosophy of life woven into his lessons.
Many times over the years, I have thought of Harry and his invaluable contributions to the young kid who lived across the street. There is a special place in heaven for men like Harry.

We are just coming home from holidays to hear this sad news. We are so sorry to hear of Harry's passing, he was a gentleman in every sense of the word and he will be very missed. It was always evident to anyone that knew Harry that family was the most important thing to him and he leaves behind a beautiful legacy of children, grandchildren, and loved ones. What a beautiful testament to an incredible life.

Dear Milly, Jeff and family,

So sad to hear of Harry's passing. While I only met him a few times, Harry was always a pleasure to speak with and I could see the profound impact he had on his family. On many occasions throughout our friendship, Jeff has spoken of his incredible relationship with his dad. I have witnessed firsthand the athletic skills passed down from father to son. "Natural exercises" like handstands on the beach or surf board come to mind. Enviable indeed.

Jeff, it's in your hands to carry on Harry's legacy as father, mentor, athlete and teacher. We know you're up for the task and the adventure.

Thinking of you all.

Dear Milly & Family,

It was so sad to hear of Harry's passing and I would like to extend my heartfelt sympathy to all of you. My prayers is that HE will bring HIS peace and comfort to all of you at this difficult time.

Ruth always referred to Harry as "The perfect Gentleman" and he was just that. Our lives were richly blessed as we came to "know you" and all of your loving family. Ruth & I treasured our enjoyable visits to your home and cherish all of those wonderful memories of our times together in Maui. I will miss him and our telephone "chats" very much.

Fondly,

Arlene Horn
