Keith Stanley "Fuzz" Joy

Keith Joy Obituary

JOY Keith Stanley "Fuzz" Joy, of Monroe, passed away peacefully on October 29th at his home. He was surrounded by his loving family after a long battle with a rare form of melanoma. Born in Granby, in 1959 to Bill and Pat Joy, his happiest memories were as a youth at his parent's home. Keith graduated from Granby Memorial High School in 1978 and attended Keene State College in Keene, N.H., obtaining a BS.Ed in Physical Education and Health in 1983. Keith taught for six years before joining his brother-in-law in insurance with the Equitable. Keith eventually joined Fidelity Investments in 1992 becoming a well respected Vice President. He worked with Fidelity's Private Access Group, which serves Fidelity's High Networth clients. He received several awards as recognition of his service and dedication to his clients. Keith received countless cards and letters during his illness from his clients as testimony to this. Prior to his illness, Keith was an avid outdoorsman and loved playing hockey. He also enjoyed coaching his son, Kevin in hockey with the Greater Bridgeport Youth Hockey Association, assisting them to a state championship. He had a special love and passion for the Adirondacks. He loved spending time at the family camp on Raquette Lake, NY. He loved to canoe, kayak, fish, water ski, swim and hike. He also loved spending time in the lean-to listening to loons and cooking s'mores in front of a ripsnorter, especially at night during Lucky Lager weekends. Keith wishes to thank his doctors at the Yale Cancer Center, Dr. Mario Sznol, Dr. Joachim Bachring and Marianne Davies, APRN, for their valiant efforts and tender care during treatment. He would also like to thank the nurses and techs who unceremoniously provide gentle care every day to cancer patients. He wishes to thank the YNHH Pediatric Emergency Department for their compassion and understanding. Lastly, many thanks to the VNS of Shelton for all their expertise during his time at home. Keith leaves his soulmate, Melissa (Morton) Joy, his two beloved children, Kevin and Jenny Joy of Darien, CT. and his two special loves, his stepchildren, Rob and Alexa Albino, of Monroe. In addition to his parents, he leaves his sister, Leslie Massa and her husband, Mark of Old Lyme, and his sister, Barbara Wetzel and her husband, Mark of Granby. He also leaves behind several nieces and nephews, aunts, uncles, cousins and in-laws as well as his many friends and colleagues. His family will receive friends on Thursday, November 1, from 5 to 8 p.m. at the Hayes-Huling & Carmon Funeral Home, 364 Salmon Brook St., (Rt 10 & 202) Granby. A memorial service will be held Saturday, November 3 at 10 a.m. at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 174 Whisconier Road, Brookfield, with the Rev. Andrew Buchanan officiating. Dear Joy Family, though I was never really close to Keith he was someone that was known by everyone in Granby High. He was one of the few that crossed the borders of the friends we all had there and I am glad to say that I knew him. My heart and prayers go out to you at this time of your loss.

I was so sad to hear of Keith's death. Even though we were not in the same "group" at GHS, as many have said before me, he was such a huge presence and he reached out to all he came in contact with. He always made us laugh. I saw him at a 10 year reunion and he had not changed a bit!

My deepest sympathies go out to all who knew and loved Keith "FUZZ" Joy, especially to his family. He was an energetic force who changed the world around him. Contact with Fuzz brought you what you needed at the moment, be that more love, laughter, goodness, hope, beauty, joy, wisdom or the faith that everything would be alright in a world that sometimes felt a little crazy. My life was changed forever the day I met the "dynamic trio" and my time at KSC was all the richer having had "Fuzz" as a friend. He will be deeply missed.

To the Joy family: My name is Donna Desharnais, I was in the 1977 class with Keith. I also took dog training with Mom Joy (we had a collie). Just the other day I was telling my husband about Keith. He was left behind in high school as well and it reminded me of Keith. Locking himself in the lockers in 7th grade, Mr. Woodworth science moving the little white tabs on the floor where our desks were supposed to be.They are endless rememberances. I was saddened to read he was so sick. He is a truly fresh smile in my mind.

I am so sorry that FUZZ lost his battle. He was the first person I met at KSC and became one of my best friends. He truly lived life to the fullest. I often tell stories of FUZZ's escapades and remember fondly all the things we did together. Melissa, the last time I saw him, you had just gotten married and he told me you changed his life. I am so glad you found each other. A hole will be left in my heart, although I will never forget his laugh and zest for fun and life. You are all in my thoughts at this very difficult time. Know that his love for all of you and his memories will keep you going. He will be loved and remembered always. Godspeed FUZZ, my fellow GDI, I'll miss you . Tami

To the Joy family,
I was so sorry to hear about Keith's passing. He was my softball coach at East Granby High School for 2 years, and I'll always remember him as someone with infinite patience and kindness. No matter what our record was, he always made sure we had fun and enjoyed the game. My thoughts and prayers are with you all at this difficult time. Rest in peace Coach Joy.

November 6, 2007

To all the Extended Joy Family,
Our hearts ache for you, and our thoughts and prayers are with you at this most difficult time. There is not a teacher who was in Granby during Keith's time in school who does not remember his contagious smile and the laughter he inspired. Although his antics did not always help our classroom management, he kept us humble and helped us maintain perspective in our work. We cannot help but smile at the memory of Keith. This is no accident. Keith's zest for life was grounded in a firm foundation of love from you, his family. The fact that Keith is remembered so fondly by so many people is a tribute to you all. We, too, have lost a child before we felt it was time. The Granby community helped provide the strength we needed to weave our lives back together when we thought we were torn apart forever. We pray that you too may find strength in your faith, family, and friends to give you courage and hope in times to come.

We are so sad to hear the news. We look back on our times at KSC and have such fond memories of "Fuzz". His love of life, sense of humor and all out SPUNK are qualities that we will never forget in our dear friend "Fuzz". We just know that he and Billsy have found one another again and before we all know it, they will be up to their old tricks in heaven! We love you Fuzz and we will never forget you. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

To the Joy Family,
Although I did not personally know Keith during school, I knew 'of' him. Who didn't...with his curly brown hair and great personality. As my dad, Bruno and his dad Bill became good friends I regularly heard about the Joy kids and feel like I know them. My sincere sympathy to all the Joy family members on the loss of a wonderful son, father and brother.

Dear Joy Family,

So many of my happiest memories of going to school in Granby involve Keith. There was the time he hid in Mrs. Lobo's closet, the day he dropped out of the locker in the back of Mr. Woodworth's science class and the night when he opened his mouth to deliver a line at play rehearsal and a gypsy moth flew out (a stunt he'd been rehearsing for some time backstage). I remember, too, lots of talk and laughter riding bus 9 to and from Kelly Lane, and our 5th high school reunion when he took me on wild ride in a golf cart at the Copper Hill Country Club. I'm sad to say that was the last time I saw him. I know he must have brought the same joyful energy and humor to his family and his work and even to his battle with cancer. I hope that you can find comfort in your memories and the love you shared. Please know that I am thinking of you all.

Fuzzy was my best friend at Wells Road. I remember the devastation on learning that Keith and I would no longer be in the same class with the move to Kelly Lane. Remarkably, his heart and spirit had a capacity to expand his love that I had not learned then and am still working on.
From sharing in the first detention of our school careers (thank you, Mrs. Lobo) to some night best left unspoken about, Keith shone brightly. The best birthday parties up on the hill in that first week of April, a family that was so gracious and a smile that told everyone "relax, it's gonna be ok".
I am warmed to read that Keith understood our purpose and future. While I am saddened to hear of his passing from this world, I rejoice as Paul did to think of the gain Keith is experiencing - "To live is Christ, to die is gain."
My thoughts and prayers are with his family now. May you feel the peace of God's Spirit leading and comforting you. Thank you for all you have given me.

"Fuzz", what a remarkable person..I will remember you as funny, social (aka wild) and kind at KSC. When we crossed paths later in life, I will remember you as smart, passionate , emotional and loving...a great parent and role model. Your family, while sad, must also be so very proud...I will miss you and hope that you have found "Billsy" in party heaven .my heart goes out to your family ...love you KSC buddy!

Keith will be greatly missed. We knew one another from before he met my sister Marj, whom he later married and had Kevin and Jenny with. He was my P.E. Teacher (Coach Joy) when I was a freshman at Wright Tech. Always had a smile, a intensity and determination in everything he did. He made an impact on my life and I will never forget. Memoriesof Keith will stay in my heart forever. Rest in Peace.

November 3, 2007

Dear Pat, Bill, Barb and Leslie-
