Herbert Weaver Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on Aug. 12, 2008.
FORESTDALE — Herbert S. Weaver, 87, of Forestdale, died Aug. 8, 2008, at the Brockton Veterans Administration Hospital, following a long battle with Parkinson's disease.

A descendant of Constance Hopkins, a Mayflower passenger, he was a lifelong resident of Sandwich and graduated from Sandwich High School (then the Henry T. Wing School ) in 1939. He served in the Army Air Forces from 1942 to 1946.

Mr. Weaver owned and operated the Forestdale Service Station and Variety Store for 25 years. He was the past president of the Forestdale Men's Club and started the Forestdale branch of the Sandwich Fire Department, where he was a volunteer fireman and EMT. He taught CPR to new mothers and was very active in the Forestdale Baptist Church, where he did a lot of volunteer carpentry work doing renovations and additions. He was also church treasurer for more than 30 years. He was a skilled finish carpenter for more than 30 years and was a retired member of the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He helped build some of the barracks at Otis Air Force Base during World War II and allegedly has Weaver Road and Herbert Street named after him. He was a volunteer bus driver for the church and Camp Good News and was a regular bus driver for the Barnstable School District from the age of 65 to 80 with a perfect attendance record.

He married Gwendolyn Livingston on Oct. 17, 1947, and she survives. Also surviving are three daughters, Joyce (Jerry) McCord of Mulege, Mexico, Patricia Weaver of Forestdale, and Marcia (John) Mueller of Sedro-Woolley, Wash.; a son, David Weaver of New Boston, N.H.; six grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by four brothers, Kenneth, Samuel, Robert and John; and two sisters, Georgia Fairbanks and Doris Lorenz.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. Thursday until time of services at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Forestdale Baptist Church, Route 130, in Forestdale. Burial will follow in the Massachusetts National Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to Forestdale Baptist Church or Camp Good News.

Our sympathy to Gwen and the family. Herb and working in the station were a well remembered part of my later teen years.
