EASTHAM — Robert J. Novotny died peacefully at his home in Eastham on Sept. 25, 2008.

Bob was born on June 17, 1926, in New York City. He was a graduate of Weehawken High School in New Jersey and Stevens Technical Institute and the National Technical School, also in New Jersey.

He served two years in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific Theater on the LSM 342. Bob received three honorable medals for his service to his country.

He spent most of his career working for Bergen Iron and Engineering Co. and Burgess Steel LLC, both in New Jersey, as a structural estimator and design engineer, until he retired to Cape Cod.

Bob met his wife Trudy (Dietrich) during their high school years. They were married after the war in 1948, and spent 60 wonderful years together. Bob and Trudy lived and raised their family in Ramsey, N.J. After spending many wonderful summer vacations with their family and friends on the Cape, they moved to Eastham in 1982.

Bob loved to paint, fish, garden, travel, and he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and family. He also was a great New England sports fan. He was very active with the Eastham Council on Aging and very involved in managing the Friends of Eastham Council on Aging Travel Club.

Bob is survived by his wife, Trudy Novotny (Dietrich); a daughter, Carole Newton (Novotny), of Sharon, N.H.; a son, Robert W. Novotny of Montville, N.J.; and four grandchildren, Heather, Sarah, Lauren, and Richard.

Viewing hours will be from 3 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2008, at the Nickerson Funeral Home, 77 Eldredge Park Way, Orleans. A funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, 2008, at the Methodist Church in Eastham. Interment will follow the church service at the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.
