EAST SANDWICH — Elbert "Elby" Francis Powell, 91, of East Sandwich, formerly of Friendship, Maine, passed away peacefully at Cape Cod Hospital on Thursday, Oct. 2, 2008.

Born in Cambridge, he was the son of the late Edwin B. and Albina (Columbus) Powell. He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II and a third generation printer at the family plant, Powell Printing Company in Harvard Square.

He was an avid ham radio operator (W1KNW), enjoyed sailing his Friendship sloop and was a 65-year veteran of Amicable Lodge, AF & AM.

He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Statia (Pojda) Powell, a niece, Shirley Powell and her husband, Ernest L. Prouty of South Yarmouth; a nephew, Waldo I. Powell and his wife, Disa, of Osterville; and several grand nieces and nephews.

Visitation with Masonic services will be held from 4 to 7 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 6, at Nickerson-Bourne Funeral Home, 154 Route 6A, Sandwich. Graveside services will be held at 10:15 a.m., Tuesday, Oct. 7, at Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne.

In lieu of flowers, contributions are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.
