Catherine Van Doren Obituary

DENNIS — Catherine Marling Van Doren, 90, died in her sleep Oct. 13, 2008, on Cape Cod after a brief illness.

After graduating from Smith College in 1940, she served in the Navy from 1943 to 1946 as a lieutenant in the Waves and Watch Officer for the Eastern Sea Frontier.

A longtime resident of North Stamford, Conn. and Dennis, Mass., Catherine was a member of the parish of St. Francis Church in Stamford and supporter of the Bartlett Arboretum, Ferguson Library and other local organizations.

She is survived by her son, Alfred Timothy Terrell, and his wife, Amber; sisters Melinda Maclean and Harriet Sheers; numerous nephews, nieces, grandnephews and grandnieces; and from her marriage with the late A. Reading Van Doren, stepchildren Phoebe Gould, Peter, Charles and David Van Doren, and numerous step-grandchildren. Catherine was very much beloved and will be very sorely missed.

Catherine was a delightful woman, and so much fun to work with at the Bartlett Arboretum, she was a joy to know. How nice she was blessed with a long, interesting life!
