Christopher Herald Lovelock

EASTHAM — Christopher Lovelock was born in Saltash, Cornwall, July 12, 1940, "between a thunderstorm and an air raid," as he liked to tell.

He graduated from the University of Edinburgh with an Master of Arts in economics and a BCom degree. He came to the U.S. in 1967, where he received an MBA from Harvard and then a Ph.D. from Stanford, where his dissertation was on marketing public transportation.

Author, teacher and consultant, Christopher Lovelock was a "founding father of services marketing" and recognized around the world as a leading authority on service management. He was an adjunct professor at the Yale School of Management since 2001, and his distinguished academic career also included 11 years at Harvard Business School and visiting appointments in Switzerland, France, and Australia.

Christopher Lovelock was widely traveled. He has given seminars in more than 30 countries and taught on every continent except Antarctica. A prolific and award-winning writer, he was author or co-author of numerous books on services, most recently, "Services Marketing: People, Technology, Strategy 6th edition," co-authored with Jochen Wirtz. Christopher Lovelock's other books included "Product Plus," "Marketing Challenges," and "Public and Nonprofit Marketing," (the latter two with Charles Weinberg). He wrote some 60 articles, and over 100 teaching cases. His work has been translated into 11 languages.

Christopher Lovelock moved full time to Cape Cod, in Eastham, in 1990. Eastham was not only his base for international travel and writing, but also the community where he was actively involved. Locally, he extended his professional expertise to public and nonprofit organizations in education, health care, environmental conservation and regional transportation. He was well-known throughout the Cape for advocating for issues ranging from solutions to summer traffic to undergrounding utility lines. He was a frequent contributor of Op Ed pieces for the Cape Cod Times, and an adviser for numerous local organizations.

He was an avid gardener, hiker and photographer. Above all, he loved his family and traveling to wherever in the world they might be.

Christopher Lovelock is survived by his son, Timothy Lovelock; daughter, Elizabeth Lovelock; his brothers, Roger Lovelock of Newbury, England, and Jeremy Lovelock of Brisbane, Australia; and his sister, Rachel Lovelock, of Bali, Indonesia.

A memorial service will be held in the Church of the Holy Spirit, Monument Road, Orleans, Friday, Feb. 29, 2008, at 11 a.m.
