Charles Bolchoz Obituary

BOLCHOZ, Charles Charles Budds Bolchoz, husband of Peggy Lightsey Bolchoz and son of Ruford J. and Margaret Budds Bolchoz, died in a massive explosion in the T2 Laboratories at which he worked in Jacksonville, Florida on Wednesday, December 19, 2007. A memorial service will be held at St. Patrick Church in Jacksonville on Wednesday, December 26, 2007 at 3:00 o'clock. Charles' remains will be brought to Charleston where the Mass of Christian Burial will take place Friday, December 28, at 10:00 o'clock at Christ Our King Catholic Church. The Rite of Committal will follow in Mount Pleasant Memorial Gardens. There will not be a Wake Service or Visitation scheduled. Charles was born in Charleston on June 13, 1959. He graduated from Bishop England High School as third honor graduate in 1977 and from Clemson University in 1981 where he was editor of 'The Tiger', the Clemson school paper. He earned his Masters degree in Chemical Engineering at Clemson in 1984. He was a career Chemical Engineer and had been published. He worked for Westvaco in Charleston and Millennium Specialty Chemicals in Jacksonville, FL prior to his employment at T2 Labs. His death in the 'hellish inferno', as described in 'The Florida Times-Union', is extremely painful for those who loved him. Mr. Bolchoz, in addition to his wife and parents, is survived by two brothers, COL (Ret.) J. Manning Bolchoz and his wife Maureen of Tampa, Florida and Dr. R. Joseph Bolchoz Jr. and his wife Patty of Mount Pleasant, two sisters Karen Bolchoz Ferguson and her husband, Lonnie, and Judith Bolchoz Callan and her husband Les. He leaves six nephews, Manning, Ryan, Patrick, Trey, Lonnie, and Ian and two nieces, Beth and Lauren. He also leaves a stepson Shawn Lightsey and one grandchild, Kiara Flentroy. The family requests no flowers but memorials may be sent to The Bishop England High School Endowment Fund 363 Seven Farms Drive, Charleston, South Carolina 29492. THE JAMES A. MCALISTER FUNERAL HOME, (843) 766-1365, in a very caring way, is guiding the family through this tragedy. Visit our guestbook at www.charleston.net/deaths.

Manning,

I was devastated by this news about Charles. He was one of my very favorite ever Clemson students and a super editor of The Tiger. I have kept up with Charles through the years but met his wife only recently at the 100th anniversary of the student paper.

What can I do in his honor and memory? Such a great guy. He will certainly be missed by many.

Manning (normally sir, but not this time),

I am truly sorry for your loss and I think I know how difficult this is for you as I have lost family members also - but not my brother. We have also lost many members of our "extended AF family" over the years and these are tough to bear as well - but different!

You were missed at the TACLAN team gathering and I know many folks were cognizant of your absence - we wish you well.

My thoughts and prayers, and those of my family, are with you and yours in this hour of need.

It seems it was quick and sudden for your brother and I thank God that he doesn't have to suffer any more. May he rest in Peace.

God bless you and his remaining family and give them strength to carry on.

Value what is real and close to the heart as nothing else matters!

Manning -- thank you for your e-mail. I am one of those Tiger staffers who served under Charles' editorship. I don't know if you know, but at The Tiger's centennial celebration in March, a fund was established in Dr. Henry's name that supports The Tiger. It is now a truly independent newspaper -- I'm sure you know that while Charles was editor, there were several clashes with the university's administration over content, and a few years ago The Tiger staff voted to forego university funding, and now supports itself. I was wondering if it would be OK if I made a donation to the Dr. Louis Henry fund in Charles' memory. I don't mind giving to Bishop England, but I would really like to give to the organization that brought us together. I am so sorry for your and your family's loss, and want to let you know I am thinking about you all.

Hi Manning....

let me start by expressing my sincerest and deepest condolences. i have to admit, i'm still numb to the news, and i can't even begin to imagine how you and your family are enduring.

i met Charles in 1980 when i joined the Tiger as a freshman. Charles had such a great sense of humor that i can still remember how he playfully taughted me in a way that only Charles could. quickly, i appreciated Charles's conversations, and his thoughts, in a way only a naive freshman could.

I saw Charles pretty much thoughout my four years at Clemson, and although i would hear about his exploits, i never saw him again until this past summer at our reunion. it was a great pleasure for me (and the rest of the Tiger staff) to get back in touch after 20+ years; moreover, it was wonderful to realize the bonds that kept us together all those years ago were just as strong the summer of 2007.

living in Colorado, i will not make it to services, but i wanted to let you know your brother and your family have been deeply in my thoughts this past week, and will continue to be in my thoughts and prayers for the immediate future.

thank you so much for sharing your thoughts with me.

Manning,

I want to convey my simpathy to you and your family on the loss of your brother Charles. I can only imagine the impact of losing a family member so young in life. My memory of a younger Charles growing up in Cooper Estates is cloudy, but I have a co-worker and friend who was in Judy & Les' wedding and he has told me what a very nice person he is. I will not be able to attend the service but my prayers will be with your family.

Dear Manning,

I worked with Charles on The Tiger at Clemson and also graduated with him in 1981.  I was also trying to remember if I knew Charles from Govenrnor's School in Charleston.

While at Clemson,  I also remember staying one night at your parent's house and going to mass with him.

It is a shock to hear about the death of a friend tragically in an accident.  I remember hearing about the explosion on NPR while I was driving home from work, but would never had thought that I would know someone who died in the accident.  My prayers will go out to you and your family during this holiday season.  Today, I will reflect on my fond memories of Charles and the great times that we had together at Clemson.  I had not seen Charles since Clemson and could not make The Tiger reunion in Clemson.  I have lived in Denver since 1991 and try on return on Darlington as often as possible to see my mother who is now in assisted living.

Thank you for seeking out Charles' old friends by email and letting us know about his death.

Holly Behre

January 6, 2008

Dear Manning,

I'm Holly Hamor Behre, a 1982 graduate of Clemson who worked with Charles at the Tiger for two years. I am so sorry for your loss, and thank you for your email. My prayers are with you and your family.

As you may know, Charles was very devoted to our college journalism adviser, Dr. Louis Henry, and many of our old Tiger staff were collaborating on a project to send a Christmas card around the country by mail, collecting signatures from each of us, to send to Dr. Henry in time for Christmas.

I now live in Charleston, and Charles contacted me over Thanksgiving weekend to say he was in town and would like to sign the card. He was so concerned about getting the card to Dr. Henry on time that he actually ended up taking it from me, and making two more stops on his way south on I-95 to get two more Tiger alumni to sign it, before sending it on its way.

That was the kind of person I always remember Charles as being: generous and kind, and quick to jump in and make things happen. He was a fine editor at the Tiger, and had a lot to do with my decision to go into journalism after graduation. I'm so glad I got to introduce my husband Robert and our children to him while he was here last month.

Again, thank you for taking the time during this difficult period to make sure Charles' Tiger friends were informed. Christmas blessings to you and all the Bolchoz family.

Holly

Priscilla Bunton Bumbaca

January 6, 2008

Dear Manning,

I want to express my deepest sympathy to you and your family, especially your parents. I am keeping all of you in my thoughts and prayers.

You were correct in that the Tiger staff had gathered for an informal reunion at Clemson back in June. This resulted from the more formal 100th Tiger anniversary that was held in March. Charles and Peggy attended both of these.
I was at the June reunion and was delighted to see him and meet Peggy. He proudly showed us pictures of his darling granddaughter. My overall impression was that Charles was happy and doing well.

Charles was very instrumental in our Tiger reunion group's latest project - a Christmas card signed by each of us to Dr. Henry, the Tiger faculty advisor when we were at Clemson. The card was created by one of our friends in Atlanta, and was mailed to each of us to sign and mail to the next person on the list. Before Thanksgiving, we were getting concerned that the card would not make it in time for Christmas, so Charles took the card from Charleston, drove it down to get two more signatures from friends in Bluffton and Savannah, then mailed it to me in northern Virginia. This card was mailed early last week from the last friend in Washington state.

Charles was a wonderful person. All of us former Tiger staffers are going to miss him greatly.

Thank you for sending us this e-mail. I think most of us learned of his death by Friday via e-mails or phone calls.
May God comfort you and your family during this time.

With fondest memories of Charles,

Priscilla Bunton Bumbaca
