James Rice Obituary

James Darrell Rice
Mr. Rice, 77 of Charlotte died Thursday, November 1, 2007 at the Brian Center. Born in Glen Hendrick, WV on September 12, 1930, Jim was the son of the late John Sherman Rice and Ethel Mae Allen Rice. He served with the US Army during the Korean War and following his discharge moved to Charlotte. Mr. Rice had been employed as a printer with the Western North Carolina Conference of the United Methodist Church. He retired after 15 years of service. He was an active member of the former Shamrock Drive Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon and a greeter, a role that fit Jim well, for he was known for his warm and welcoming smile. Mr. Rice took great interest in his grandson attending his sporting events, chapel services and school functions. His wife described him as 'a Godly and faithful man and loving husband and father.'
Jim is survived by his wife of 56 years, Alva Hill Rice of the home; son and daughter-in-law, Mark and Karen Rice and grandson, Zachary Rice, all of Charlotte; sisters, Louise McDaniel of Jefferson City, TN, and Martha Franklin of Cowpens, SC.
The family will receive friends Monday, November 5th from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 AM with the Reverend Dr. Mike Jamison and Reverend Stephen Rummage officiating. Interment will take place in Sharon Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, the family has asked that memorials be made to Grace Crossing Church, POB 44248, Charlotte, NC, 28215 or the Alzheimer's Association, 3800 Shamrock Dr., Charlotte, NC, 28215.
Carolina Funeral Service & Cremation Center is entrusted with the arrangements.

Words cannot begin to express the sorrow I feel for the passing of Mr Rice. My brother Chris and I have known the Rice family forever and were always happy to see them out and about. My family would like to express our deepest sympathies in this sad hour. Mr and Mrs Rice were present at the funerals of both my parents and their presence made us think of our church family at Shamrock Drive and all the wonderful times we had there. Keep the faith and remember that God has the ultimate plan for us all. God Bless

Alva,
I was deeply upset when I heard of the passing of Jim. Everytime I saw you two walking around the property he always had a smile on his face and a nice word to say. I will miss seeing his smile. Please know that if you need anything that I am just right up the hill. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

Alva,
Just a note to say I'm thinking of you and certainly remember what a pleasant personality Jim had. We always said "The Rices" and never Jim and Alva. The two of you were always a package deal. I'm sure things will be different now but just arm yourself with a can of Ensure and a banana and keep your chin up!
I also still remember the heart-felt conversations you and I had when we worked together. Those were some good times!

Alva and Mark,

Growing up, I remember how gentle and nice Uncle Jimmy was. I regret that our families lived so far apart. I got to see him when you all came to Tennessee a few years ago and it struck me what a really cool person he was. Very laid back and nothing seemed to bother him. My prayers go out to your family. Dear Alva and family,
I am so sorry to hear of Jim's passing. I have such fond memories of his smile and encouraging words every time I saw him. The both of you meant so much to me as I grew up at Shamrock. And even as an adult, when our paths crossed, he was the first one to say hello and ask about my family. He has left an amazing legacy on this earth. He will truly be missed.

Love,
Heather Smith McManus

Louise (Rice) McDaniel

I am Louise Rice McDaniel and I am Jimmy's sister. Words cannot express the sadness I feel over the loss of my brother. Unfortunately, due to my own health reasons, I cannot travel for many hours at a time. I grieve for Jimmy's loss, but I feel like we had a good friendship while he was alive. I remember some of the fun times we had growing up. We didn't have much money, but we had a lot of love and that is what counts. I will be praying for Alva and Mark and his family. God Bless You!

I was so saddened to hear of your loss, but it is so reassuring to know the person that Jim was and to know that he now resides in heaven with our Heavenly Father. Take comfort in knowing this. May God give you and your family peace and strenght at this time.
