Leon Love Obituary
Leon Love, 85, founding chairman of the Department of Radiology at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, died Tuesday, March 24 while snorkeling in Mexico with his wife of 52 years, Rita, nee Levinthal. An avid traveler, swimmer, and bicycle rider until the end, he went from the chairmanship at Cook County Hospital to Loyola when that medical center opened in 1969, building the department into one with a national reputation. In addition to his wife,
Rita, he is survived by his children,
Jonathan (Michelle), Matthew (May) and Emily (Christopher); his brother Hyman; and four grandchildren. Memorial Service Sunday, April 5 at 1:30 p.m. at North Shore Congregation Israel, 1185 Sheridan Road, Glencoe, IL 60022. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Rosalind Franklin University of Medicine and Science, 3333 Green Bay Rd, North Chicago, IL 60064 or Family Service of Glencoe, 675 Village Court, Glencoe, IL 60022. Dear Mrs. Love,
I am so sorry to hear of Dr. Love's passing. I worked with him in the radiology department at Loyola U.M.C. as a sales representative and was always welcomed with kindness and respect. Providing exceptional patient care was of utmost importance. He will be missed.

Leon Love always seemed so alive. He energized, encouraged and supported all of us for many years. His loyalty was felt. His mildly sardonic sense of humor leavened almost every day. For me and others, he was and will always be the chairman of the Loyola Radiology Department. There is only one Leon Love. I owe him a great deal in many ways. My heart goes out to the Love family.

He was a very special man to us and we appreciate all that both of you did for us over 30 years ago now, when I was a resident in Radiology at Loyola. Dear Rita, It has been a long time. I hope you remember me. I first met Leon at Ft. Leonard Wood when I came home from Korea in 1953. He was already head of Radiology at that base. For reasons for which I won't go into detail we had a joke going later that he was the Jewish god-father of my numerous Catholic children. Later he did the radiology at an office where I was one of four practices. At that time Leon and I and others would have lunch together at Cook County Hospital where I made rounds for Loyola and Leon was director of Radiology. I remember his calling me to tell me of his offer from Loyola U. and asked my input as to whether he should accept the offer. I told him yes, of course. He was a dedicated, accomplished physician. I shall remember him and the pleasnt time I had with him, professionally and socially. By the way, Rita, while most people drift right in their dotage, I have turned leftward in mine. I enjoyed Leon's company at the New Yorker class. He will be missed. When I read his obituary I realized he was a man of enormous accomplishment. His family, I'm sure, is grateful for his wonderful life.
