Family-Placed Obituary

Jan Hinkle Brainard died on September 5, at her home after a courageous battle with cancer. Jan Brainard was a fifth generation Texan, born and raised in Houston. She attended TCU where she earned a degree in Elementary Education. She was a second grade teacher at St. Andrew's Episcopal School and later a first grade teacher at St. Martin's Lutheran School. She served on various gala committees such as Junior Helping Hand and The Natural Science Guild. She was also co-chair of the KLRU Auction. In 1995 Jan co-founded Sterling Affairs, a full service catering and event planning company. She started the business with $200 and by 2000 Sterling Affairs was dubbed the tenth fastest growing privately held company in Austin by the Austin Business Journal. It was also honored as one of the three most successful catering companies in Central Texas. Jan was a beloved teacher, a successful entrepreneur, the world's greatest hostess, a wonderful mother and a friend to everyone she met. She is survived by her children George and wife, Mindy, John and his friend, Kishna; her sisters, Dee Hinkle and Georgia and Sam Akers; and nieces, Stephanie and Lori Brainard, Mary Jan and Fred Lantz and their children, Sarah, Patrick and David, Allison Sagewind, and Elizabeth and Jason Hewatt and their children, Ashley, Hailey, and Josh. She is predeceased by her parents, George Hinkle and Mary Dee Hallson, and her sister, Diane Hinkle. Many thanks to all of her friends for their love and support during her illness.
