George Arthur Newell Jr.

George Arthur Newell Jr. George Newell, son of the late George A. Newell Sr. and Martha Dollie (Ford), died at his home in Alameda on September 25 after a long illness. Born in Lawton, OK, on March 29, 1923, George Moved to Alameda after serving in the U.S. Army in Europe from 1942 to 1946. In 1956, he began work at the Lawrence Radiation Laboratory at Berkeley on the Heavy Ion Linear Accelerator (Hilac) and was a member of the scientific team that discovered the elements Rutherfordium (#104) in 1969 and Seaborgium (#106) in 1974. He retired as Staff Scientist Mechanical Engineer in 1984. George was well known among sports car racing enthusiasts and was one of the first members of the Classic Sportscar Racing Group (CSRG). Also a member of the Aston Martin Owner's Club, he owned two Aston Martins, one a touring car and the other a racing model. A high point in his racing career was driving his own car in the Mille Miglia in Italy in 1984. He was an excellent mechanic and enjoyed working with his many friends on Maserattis, Ferraris and other sports cars in his garage. Preceded in death by his brothers, Francis L., J. Gordon, Grady W., and W. Allen, George is survived by his wife of 56 years, Dolly (Landers); his son, Earl W. of Duncan, Oklahoma; brother, Marvin R. Newell of Sparks, NV; sisters, Lola B. Giordanella of Castro Valley, Martha L. Turner, Iris I. Watson and Barbara F. Newell of Alameda; grandson, Colt Newell and granddaughter, Chandra Newell, both of Sunriver, OR; four great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. He is also remembered by Ifereimi Matatolu (Bani), his caretaker for several years during all stages of Parkinson's disease. Services were private with interment at Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland. A memorial celebration of George's life will be held on October 6 at the Elks Lodge, Alameda, CA, at 11 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations to the National Parkinson Foundation are suggested.
