Donald Heyne Obituary
Donald Gustav Heyne, 99, departed this life peacefully at Morningside Assisted Living on Sunday, June 10, 2007.
Born on April 20, 1908, on a farm near Cortland, New York, he was the son of the late Ernst Bruno Heyne and Johanna Bubenzer Heyne. His wife of 73 years, Jeannette, passed away in December of 2006; and a daughter, Charlotte Marian Heyne Coleman died in 1984. He was also preceded in death by three older siblings, Anne Foreman, Quentin Heyne and Margaret Stryer.
He is survived by a daughter, Suzanne Zimmerman and her husband, Robert of Earlysville; four grandchildren, Dr. Mary C. Coleman of Kingston, New York, Edwin Coleman of Boston, Massachusetts, Sarah Clark and her husband, Daniel, of La Grange Park, Illinois, and David W. Hill and his wife, Janet, of Denver, Colorado; four great-grandchildren, Elizabeth and Robert Clark, Katharine and Brendan Hill; and a niece, Patricia Zazo of Emmaus, Pennsylvania.
Mr. Heyne moved from Cortland, New York to Washington, D.C. in 1925, and began working and attending Benjamin Franklin University, graduating with honors in Business Administration. He was the treasurer of Walker and Dunlop Inc, and President of Standard Properties Inc. He married the love of his life, Jeannette, in 1933.
Moving to Charlottesville in 1956, he was the Owner and President of WINA Radio, a career move that he greatly enjoyed. He won several awards from the Virginia Association of Broadcasters and a Freedom Foundation Award for his broadcast editorials.
Mr. Heyne served as President of the Charlottesville-Albemarle Chamber of Commerce from 1965 until 1966); President of the Charlottesville Rotary Club from 1968 until 1969; and director of Citizens' Bank from 1964 until 1979. He served on the board of the Salvation Army and the Senior Center, in its infancy.
He was an elder of the First Presbyterian Church and an honorary lifetime member of the Salvation Army. Also a member of Farmington Country Club and the Non-conclusive Breakfast Club. In his later years he traveled extensively and played many rounds of golf with his wife, Jeannette.
Donald lived a long and interesting life. He loved and cared for his family completely. We will miss his lavish sense of humor and his stories about growing up in rural upstate New York when times were tough.
Funeral services will be private.
