I was once taught a very important lesson and, while at the time, I thought it was meant only to keep me alive during an activity, I realize that the lesson is much more
Flying:
An airplane in flight is an amazing set of circumstances, physics, skill and sometimes just dumb luck. Each control, the feet controlling the rudder, the hands and arms controlling pitch and yaw all have to work in perfect unison in order to attain controlled flight. If you grip too tighly on the controls during flight it is almost certain your are going to crash and burn. A sudden updraft, downdraft, a change in wind direction or any combination of these could cause a sudden loss of control. The only way to ensure a smooth flight is to maintain a light touch on the controls and adjust accordingly.
Funny thing is that is the same way you should approach life. A tight grip, although seemingly the right thing to be doing can be just as disastrous as a hands-off approach. A light touch with gentile correction is enough to keep your life on course. A good pilot is always aware of their surroundings and always learning different ways to handle those in-flight emergencies without over-correcting and crashing.
thank you my friend

Missing you tons today bro. My boyfriend went to the airstrip today and brought home pix of airplane similar to the one I remember you flying over my house as a child, with Danny hanging out the door of the plane shouting to us. And I remember every time Danny put me in a tree you were the one to take me and put me back on the ground. I'll always love and miss you! <3 your lil sis

Dear Linda & Denny,
I was thinking of Lenny today. He and Tom played together when we lived in the apartment on Fair Oaks, what seems so long ago. Do you remember me? Laying in the sun, playing cards and board games in your kitchen, boating on Lake St Mary's. I have this book that tells a story of Lenny and Tom that I had made when I lived there. "My Undersea Adventure". I lost Tom April 19th of this year, so I know the pain associated with losing a child. My thoughts are with you and your family.

lenny was my best friend when I was in tenth grade he was a couple years older than me..we used to talk hours on phone late at night spend our weekends goofing off at the golf course with ronnie and john willhem, we would ride his motorcycle even when i broke my leg, even lost the crutches in the woods somewhere..drove the bowling alley and skating rink path every weekend to see what we could get into...we even terrorized his neighborhood with fireworks...i can't tell you how much you made me smile, i miss you dearly. you made my teenage years so rememberable. we never dated as we thought it would ruin a perfect friendship...fly forever my friend...i love ya.

Denny,Linda & Danny,
Cheryl and I, are very sad to hear of your loss.
We wanted you to know, that you all are in our thoughts
and prayers.
We shared many good times with the boys as they were
growing up. Cheryl with the boys doing the newspapers, I would
dropping Lenny off for his flying lessons, and just fooling
around at our house. We could say many things about Lenny,
but he went doing what he loved the most which was flying.
We used look outside everytime we hear a plane, thinking it was
probably Lenny. Lenny would fly over the house, tip his wings
as he flew by, with Danny hanging out the door yelling Hi,
to us from the plane.
We have always regarded the boys as part of our
extended family. We will miss Lenny very much.

I met the man in my dreams!
He was deliciously funny, silly, brilliant, exciting....... I was so lucky to meet him...... He was the most wonderful part of my journey in this life.
I did things I always wanted to do and didn't even know I could do.
He challenged me!!!
He made me laugh till I cried.
I knew from the very beginning when he walked into my galley. We never took each other for granted. We cherished every moment.
I had the time of my life.
I was honored to know him, and love, and be loved by him, if even just for a brief moment.
I will always keep him in my heart

Leonard was one of the good ones. He was always a joy to be around. I only knew Lenny for a short amount of time as he commuted back and forth between DAY and DEN. He made coming to work worth it! Just to see his smile and have a few minutes to speak with him before he flew out was something I always looked forward to. He would always offer to help just because he was there.
We had been planning on taking my little boy to see the Maple trees and how the syrup was made but he was just a little bit young, only 2 this year, so we were waiting until next year to go. I will still try to find a way to take him because Leonard really enjoyed it, it must be something else to see.
He will be missed but never forgotten....My thoughts and prayers go out to his whole family all who knew him!
Lenny may you spread your wings and fly....

Leonard was a ray of sunshine where ever he was. It was always nice to see him as you knew he was always genuinely concerned about his passengers and always going above and beyond to accommodate anyway he could. My first memory of Leonard was him coming into the US Airways Express/PHL Manager's office to to let us know he was waiting for a jetway driver, however he already disembarked his passengers safely into the terminal :). He will be missed.

I worked with Len at Air Wisconsin, and most recently talked with him upon boarding his flight to Philly on Thursday evening before the incident. He told me and a fellow ZW first officer about the trip to Nevada he and Nikki would be taking on Tuesday. He did what HE LOVED, and LOVED WHAT HE DID. A lesson well learned. Condolences to all, and a speedy recovery to Nikki. he was a REAL HONEY.

Len was an extraordinary person. He made flying more enjoyable. He loved his job and it showed. Len was the only captain I knew that would stand in the galley and introduce himself and the rest of the crew to the passengers, and the passengers loved him for that. He was always smiling, no matter what kind of day he was having. I was very sad to see him leave Air Wisconsin, but was happy he was going back to Denver. He will be greatly missed.

We moved here to Beavercreek in August last year and Lenny was the best next-door-neighbor we could ask for. He was the guy who played with our dogs with me in the back yard. He and Nikki often invited us over for BBQ food and wine. He would have bon-fires in his back yard and was the inspiration for me to make my own fire-pit. He would often mow part of my front yard while he was mowing his "since he was already do'in it". Just two weeks ago I spent an hour talking with him in his garage about life in general. Then last week they had a bon-fire and I was over for a glass of wine and we were chatting about scuba-diving adventures with Nikki and Rich and we hung out again that night at like 3AM, since I was trying to pull an all-nighter studying for a final exam in my grad school and I found comic relief in going over to the bon-fire where the three of them were being quite conversational. Lenny was often on the road, but made it a point to have a good time if he ever was in town. Lenny was a great guy and will be missed greatly. Lenny's brother Dan was kind enough to stop by our house this evening to inform us of the sad news, which we had missed since we were away visiting family last week. Our thoughts and prayers are with Lenny's family and loved ones. If there is anything we could do as neighbors -- ANYTHING -- please don't hesitate to let us know. ([email protected]).

To The Notek Family,
I pray that God comforts all of you in this time of need. Lenny will be deeply missed by all of us at flying at Air Wisconsin, and that ever present smile I WILL NEVER FORGET. I last talked to Lenny about a month ago, and he was on a trip, doing what he loved. My Prayers are also with nikki for a fast recovery, she was my neighbor in Denver until a few months ago. I made a promise to lenny that I would get my private pilots license and to get back in the gym... I will honor those promises. I am greatful to have known Lenny.

Mr. & Mrs. Notek, Dan & Nikki,
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.
I met Lenny when he was at Emery with my husband and we all became great friends. I have many happy memories of Lenny. It did not matter what we were doing, Lenny was always up for a new adventure & he always knew how to have fun. I will always remember the good times we shared in Colorado, NJ, Ohio, NYC and California. I will never forget his passion for flying, for trains and maple syrup.
And I will always remember how happy he was, especially the last time we saw him. He was really looking forward to his future with Nikki. They were so in love that they glowed. And we were so happy for them.
The things that I will miss most about Lenny are his smile, his adventurous spirit, his kindness, his selflessness, his positive attitude & his love for life. Lenny was such an amazing person and I am so honored to have known him.

I've just learned of this tragedy today and wish that I could have attended the services to remember Lenny. Like a lot of people here, I knew Lenny from school, from junior high through high school, and he was always smiling and in a good mood. I only ran into him a few times in the last few years, but even then, it was clear that he loved his flying and being able to do it for a living. I'm very saddened to learn of his passing.

I'll never forget the first time I walked into the AirWisconsin Crew Room and saw Lenny sitting in there. It seemed like there was this glow about him and that everyone around him loved being in his presence. When I finally met him I understood why. Lenny could just walk into a room and light up the place . I never once met a Captian like Lenny who would go out of his way to meet and assits every passanger that stepped onto his plane. I'll never forget the first time he walked out and took the Interphone P.A from me to welcome the passangers on board... To this day I have never seen another pilot do this and the passangers loved him. It is a shame that the world has lost such a great man.

Growing up all of us in the neighborhood spent lots of time together learning what life was all about- love, life, and friends. It makes me smile just thinking of the things we did!
As I've gotten older, everytime I heard a small plane over the house I'd think about Lenny. Then he'd show up on his motorcycle and the boys would yell- "the motorcycle guy is here can we go see him?" He was so good to the boys. Everytime I hear a plane I'll remember Lenny and wonder what beautiful place he's flying over now. We'll miss you Lenny.

Lenny was my flight instructor back in 1994. He had a great sense of humor! I remember every lesson like it was yesterday. I was a flight attendant for Air Wisconsin Airlines... Lenny spent a few nights at my home in Appleton, Wisconsin... as he was a commuter. He was the best guest ever... he would make me breakfast and make me cookies and brownies... I used to yell at him when he thought he could throw away his tuna cans in my galley...LOL!! Oh how I wish I could hang out with him again and listen to his stories. I worked with him quite a bit and have nothing but wonderful things to say about him!!! Lenny and I quit Air Wisconsin about the same time... One of my last trips was with him and he had just found out that he was hired at Frontier Airlines. He was so excited. One of my last encounters with Lenny was in the US Airways crew room in PHL... he made homemade brownies and wanted me to have one... And I did... It was awesome and so were you Lenny... I still can't believe you're gone!!! God Bless You!!!

In my heart has many fond memories with Len. I knew Leonard for just a short time (in comparison) and called him "Cookie", I don't know why... the name just stuck! We spent time flying, riding his motorcyle, taking hikes and hanging out. I was with him at the store when he got his 1st call from F9...we had to back out of the checkout line so he could take the call, he was ssooo excited. I know his commute to fly for ZW was difficult, but he it made it work.
I knew his love and passion for flying (and it gave me a little chuckle) when I saw his "Checklist" posted on the wall so he knew everything was done before he left the house. He was flying even when he wasn't flying!
I have syrup bottles I will keep in his memory. And I know how much he loved to collect the sap, he'd talk about the whole process for hours. I meet Richard a couple of times and I know how much he cared for his friends and family.
I feel so blessed to have known him, my heart is full and I'm saddened by this loss. May the memories you share with Len be your strength through this time.

Do not stand at my grave and weep...
I am not there. I do not sleep.
I am a thousand winds that blow;
I am the diamond glints on snow..
I am the sunlight on ripened grain;
I am the gentle autumn rain.
When you awake in the morning's hush,
I am the swift, upflinging rush
of quiet birds in circling flight.
I am the soft star-shine at night.
Do not stand at my grave and cry...
I am not there. I did not die.

I met Leonard in 2006, he became my workout mentor and I quickly learned all the things I did wrong in my workouts. I have several fond memories of Leonard in which only a few I will share. Life mattered to Leonard as did his family and friends. I had the opportunity to meet one of his dear friends Rich, who also taught me "not" to workout with them because between the two of them, my stomach would ache for days as they made me laugh. And neither one of them would allow me to quit during a set until I was blue in the face. I must say I was pretty sore for a few days, but seeing the two in action, completing one another's sentences and having fun just living life as best friends would made me quickly realize what Leonard was all about. Leonard wanted to show Rich a good time during his visit here in Colorado, so they went Sky Diving,& Rocky Mountain "sinking" with their rented "broke down" snow mobiles and talked about it for days. Leonard kept his friends and family close to his heart and it showed. He spoke often of his parents and brother who he loved dearly.
He had the best protein pancakes in Castle Rock, and a love for that syrup he was so proud of!!
He was thrilled when he got the call from Frontier and was eager to start. I was proud!!
I knew Leonard for a short time and he made a huge impact in my life. I know Leonard was born in 1971 and enjoyed life to the end-2008. But what mattered most was the "dash" between those years/dates, the lives he touched and that he lived that "dash" to the fullest!! He passes this life doing what he loved to do, fly...
I truly miss Leonard Evan Notek and so will Castle Rock, CO. My heart goes out to his family and those close to him. May God bless you all through this difficult time.

We were new hires at Frontier Airlines, this time last year. This guy was a class act through and through. Lenny was a kind spirit and if you know Nikki, they were a perfect pair. My thoughts and prayers are with Lennys family as you deal with this tragic loss. As an instructor at Emery Aviation in Colorado, Lenny and his buddy Dave Whelan challenged me on a daily basis for answers. There love for flying was second only to their loyalty to family and friends. I received the news from Dave in SFO, and read the article about the accident in Rocky Mountain News at 34000ft, west bound, with the sun setting over the pacific, thinking he would enjoy this. On behalf of the United Airlines Pilots, I wish God speed to you Lenny, you will be missed, clear skies and tailwinds always. .

Dear Linda, Denny and Danny
We were crushed to learn of Lenny's passing - such a vibrant and handsome son. We share in your loss and will hold you in our prayers and thoughts during this difficult time. You are so right - I used to tell Lenny he had a "contagious smile". He was so excited to have your help to get his motorcycle out west for him to enjoy. During that same visit to my office he mentioned what great parents you both are.
I feel honored to have known him and he is already sadly missed in this world.

I met Len eighteen years ago at Emery aviation college. My first day of class I realized I would need some help. I noticed Lenny had the largest flight bag so I assumed he was the smartest. We quickly became friends and remained friends after leaving school. I moved to New Jersey and Len to Ohio, he would come to visit often, when I moved to California Lenny drove across country with me. What I remember most about Len was his unselfish desire to help you. When my brother would fly into Denver Len was there to pick him up and drive to Lucas pizza, Lens favorite restaurant. I'm glad I was able to spend time with Len and Nikki recently in Colorado. I considered Lenny my closest friend .I loved Len and will miss him.

When I read the Dayton Daily News breaking news alert on my screen I was struck first by the sadness of knowing a young aviator had lost his life. Then I was struck by the many similar paths we crossed - I am originally from Dayton, a Wayne H.S. grad and WSU grad, my first job was in public relations for the Dayton Air Show and I now reside in Castle Rock, CO. He likely carried precious cargo, my parents, on their frequent Frontier jaunts from Dayton to Denver so they could see my family. For his family and friends, my sympathies are extended to you as I share the memories of my time with the air show. I hope it may bring some comfort and add a smile to know that the show was designed for little boys and girls like Lenny & Nikki. The pilots, from the commercial to the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels -they all loved showing off their aircraft and telling their flying stories, especially to wide-eyed youth who might one day chase the dream and fly, whether that be for their careers, their hobbies, their country or in some cases all. Once you experience that Wright Brothers passion, it gets in your blood and it appears that was true for Lenny and his girlfriend. From all the entries here, it sounds like he was a wonderful man who was living his dream. Now he'll see all the air shows from a different perspective - from above the flightline. For him, it'll be a high show every day from now on and air show visitors know you can't get better than that. For the past several evenings here in Castle Rock, there have been wonderful sunsets, the moon has been full and I can only think that Lenny has had something to do with that. Wishing a full recovery and wonderful memories to Nikki and the rest of the family. Godspeed, Flyboy.

I attended Emery Aviation College in Greeley, CO with Lenny in 1990. We quickly became very good friends when we both realized we were from Ohio and lived only hrs away. Lenny was in my wedding eventually. After going different ways in life, Len still made an effort to make contact with me. Some of my fondest memories are spending time with Len and Dave Whelen in Greeley. My sympathies to the Notek family and Ms. Romero. Lenny will be sorely missed. He always took the time to listen and lend a hand when needed. His friendship was a gift which I will never forget. God Bless.

Dear Notek Family,
I found out earlier this morning from a friend that still works at Frontier. I met Leonard when he worked at Air Wisconsin, always commuting from Denver to Ohio for work. He always brought smiles to everyones hearts and faces. Im extremely sorry for your loss.
Some people come into our lives and quickly go.
Some people move our souls to dance.
They awaken us with new understanding with the passing of their wisdom.
Some people make the sky more beautiful to gaze upon.
They stay in our lives for a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same.
