News Death Notice

ZIMMER, Richard Dick A. age 77, of Dayton, lost his courageous battle with cancer on April 19, 2010. He was born March 1, 1933 in Dayton, Ohio. He was a graduate of Chaminade High School. He then joined the United States Navy, where he served aboard the USS Intrepid. He worked at Ohio Bell Telephone, retiring after 30 years. Dick dedicated his life to the concerns of the Dayton community, beginning his life of public service on the Belmont/Eastmont/Hearthstone Community Council. He also served on the Southeast Priority Board and held many positions at Immaculate Conception Parish. He was later elected to the Dayton City Commission and served a total of 21 years, where he worked tirelessly and honorably to represent all of the citizens of Dayton. Uncle Dick, was a man that devoted his life to his family, friends and community - he will be missed by many - a great loss to us all - as far as I can remember I looked up to him - with great memories of his laugh and always having a smile at all the family functions. I first met "Dick" when I hostessed at the Park Row and he came in for dinner. Such a fine man and so proud of his family. Later, as Mayor of Bellbrook, we would meet at different meetings and he would always be so nice and friendly. Commissioner Zimmer was a friend, and mentor. He was truly one of, if not the, most honest elected official I have known, always making employees feel good about the job they were doing. My husband John and I became part of the large Zimmer family many years ago and were lucky enough to talk with him and Mary Ann a couple of weeks ago - we laughed about old times and how proud he was of his son Tim, one of John's best friends. Dayton has lost one of her biggest supporters - we have lost a great example of the type of person and American that we should all strive to be.
