Otis Byron "Obie" Hoffman

Otis Hoffman Obituary

Hoffman, Otis Byron "Obie"
Rochester. Formerly of Mount Morris. Wednesday, July 9, 2008, at age 82. He is finally at peace after a long courageous battle with cancer. He is survived by his ex-wife, Julie Ayako Hoffman; daughters, June (James) Duignan, Margaret Hoffman; son Paul Hoffman; sisters, Ruth Paternostro and Cecilia (Doug) Potter; brother James "Porter" (Jeanne) Hoffman; and several grandchildren, nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews.
He served his country in the military, both Army and Navy, for 20 years and was proud to have been a fellow shipmate with President Gerald Ford on the U.S.S. Monterey and to have had personal correspondence with him as well. He was also retired from Gleason Works in Rochester. He was very active in community neighbor associations and an avid coin collector. He provided his friends ongoing and unlimited support and compassion.
The family would like to express special thanks to Terry Steyaert and Patricia Kingslow for being such wonderful friends and neighbors to Obie and having him be a part of their family throughout the years.
Thanks to nephew-in-law Bob Steen for the weekly Sunday phone calls. Dad always looked forward to hearing from you.
Thanks also to his nurse Linda Schmidt of Lifetime Care, Home Health Aide Ruby Talbot, for the loving care and comfort she provided in his last days, and Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center.
The biggest thanks goes to Jim - his son-in-law- for his love and non-ending support. He loved you like you were his own son.
In lieu of flowers donations may be made in honor of Obie to Hildebrandt Hospice Care Center.
A private military memorial service to be announced for family and friends.

Whenever Uncle Obie would call to speak to my dad he would ask, when it was in the heat of the summer, “Where’s your father - out shoveling snow?” And, he would do the opposite if it was the middle of winter – “Is he mowing the lawn”? We could always count on him to start conversation with these same questions. One of my other favorite thoughts of him – a few years ago after he had just gotten a computer I asked him if he had an email address and his response, “I don’t know….obiehoffman.com”? I still chuckle over that when I think about it especially knowing that I will most likely have a similar situation when I am older in regard to a new technology that the younger generation has a grasp of that I have no clue about.

I looked forward to seeing him whenever I came home for summer visits and will miss his dry sense of humor. June, rest assured knowing you were a loving and devoted daughter and a great source of support and comfort to him.

My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family through this time. You were so wonderful with him and loved him so much, it was refreshing to see a daughter so diligent and dedicated to the care of her dad. I love and miss you and pray you will be comforted during this time.
