Rochester, New York: Date of death: July 20, 2008, at age 92. He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Mona Gee Thomas; sister, Shirley Thomas Biberstein; son, Gregory Thomas; daughter, Barbara Thomas Timlin; daughter in-law, Mary Pollock; son-in-law Jim Timlin; four beloved grandchildren: Edward Timlin, Andrew Thomas, Claire Timlin and Margaret Thomas; as well as several nieces and nephews. A veteran of World War II, Thomas served as a Lt. in the US Army Air Corps, with the Judge Advocate General and in training commands. Doctor Thomas received his MS at the University of Kansas, and his Ph.D. from Harvard University. He was a Professor of Psychology at the University of Rochester and served for many years as Chairman of the Center for Brain Research. He contributed to and edited numerous scientific publications including the Journal of Contemporary Psychology, the Journal of Behavioral Neurobiology, and the Journal of Comparative and Physiological Psychology. He contributed to and edited the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science and Technology, was on advisory panels for the National Institutes of Mental Health and the National Science Foundation, as well as serving as a consultant to Pfizer Corp. Thomas was a member of numerous professional organizations and was a Fellow of the American Psychological Association. As Professor Emeritus at the University of Rochester, Doctor Thomas was member of the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy. He was greatly loved and admired by the many scientists who he taught and mentored over the years. He will be dearly missed by his family and friends and all those who had the privilege to know him.
Family and friends are encouraged to gather for a Memorial Service at the Interfaith Chapel on the University of Rochester Campus on Friday, August 22, 2008 at 2:30 PM. Interment at the Saratoga National Cemetery will follow at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the scholarship fund of the University of Rochester Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy or to the Third Presbyterian Church of Rochester.
