Ridge Manor, FL. Ted Dangelmaier, 100, a 75 year member of the International Typographical Union, died of complications from COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disorder) on August 15 at his home in Ridge Manor, Florida. He was born and raised in Rochester, NY and worked for the Rochester Times Union-a Gannett Newspaper company- for 37 years, completing a two year apprenticeship in every aspect of printing and, settling into a career in the newspaper's composing room. He then accepted a position with the Washington Post and moved his family to Alexandria, Virginia in 1969. After an eight year stint there, he retired and remained in Virginia for another four years while traveling extensively up and down the East Coast with his wife of 48 years, Dorothy.
In 1981, he moved to Ridge Manor, where he became active in his neighborhood Crime Watch and Meals on Wheels programs, actively serving both until the age of 96. He was a 35 year member of John Blair Lodge #187 A.F. & A. M., having raised his son, Lynn, to the 3rd Degree in 1973. While in Rochester, he played an active role in Pittsford Democratic affairs and ran for Justice of the Peace in 1962. He was Chairman of the Monroe County Democratic Committee as well as the Democratic Executive Committeeman for the County. He organized and served two Boy Scout troops as scoutmaster and, organized the East Rochester Teen Canteen, which provided high school students with a safe & enjoyable environment for weekend dances and other functions.
He attended Trinity Lutheran Church in East Rochester where he served as president of the Brotherhood as well as president of the entire New York State Brotherhood. Although a Lutheran, he was asked to serve on the Executive Board of Nazareth Academy, a private Catholic girls school in Rochester, and served on the Board of Directors of the Catholic Youth Association.
His proudest achievement and most enjoyable experience in life was the purchasing and refurbishing of the Coachman Inn - a summer resort in Wasaga Beach, Ontario, Canada accommodating up to 100 guests - which his family and he owned and operated for 10 years.
Mr. Dangelmaier served as an active volunteer fireman for eight years and earned his exemption papers. He is an honorably discharged veteran of World War II, serving in the infantry.
He is predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Mary Dorothy Dangelmaier, and is survived by his wife, Edna of Ridge Manor, FL; sons, Lynn A. of Vienna, VA, Theodore G. of Big Flats, NY; daughters, Jan Kitchen of Port Richey, FL, Nancy Prescott of East Rochester, NY; sisters, Loretta Nohe of East Rochester, NY, Mildred Schroder of Liverpool, NY; 10 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild.
A viewing will be held at 12 Noon Friday, August 22 At the White Haven Memorial Park Creation Chapel with a service immediately following at 12;15pm. Donations in his name may be made to East Pasco Hospice, 37445 Clinton Ave. in Dade City, FL 33525.
