George Smith Obituary

Smith, George R.
Spencerport: Peacefully, Wednesday August 20, 2008 at age 95. He was predeceased by his wife of 54 years Rita (Schur) Smith, and 13 siblings. He is survived by his children, Sue (John) Zamiara, Michael Smith, Peg (Ed) Meyers, Martha (Larry) Beardsley and Marj Smith; his grandchildren, Kristen (Joshua) Bowman, Michael Zamiara, Tim (Alanna) Meyers, Eileen (Bob) Huss, Joe and Mike Meyers, Jeff (Lydia) Beardsley, Andy and Jason Beardsley; great grandchildren, Aaron, Cody, Raegan and Daityn; his sister Hester M. Smith; sister-in-law, Patricia Smith; many nieces and nephews.
George was a life-long resident of Ogden and served in the Army during WWII as a Staff Sergeant in the 34th AAA Operations Detachment, European Theater. After the war, he and his brother Les formed a partnership and purchased their dairy farm on Colby Street. Over the next thirty-five years, George successfully raised crops, cows, and a family. His infinite patience influenced several young adults who learned not only farm skills, but also life lessons while working on the farm. As George often told them, "You can't learn any younger!"
Beginning in 1956, he served on the Board of Directors of Farm Credit Services for twenty-three years. When he retired from farming in 1979, he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, cultivating his garden, delivering Meals-on-Wheels, and playing Euchre at the Ogden Senior Center. He will be lovingly remembered for the size and strength of his hands and the warmth of his heart. His family is grateful for the many loving caregivers who touched his life in his home, at Seabury Woods, and at the Hospice at The Heritage.
Friends may call Monday 2-4 and 6-8 PM at Walker Brothers Co. Funeral Home Inc., 15 West Avenue, Spencerport. Memorial Service, Tuesday at 11:00 AM at St. Vincent dePaul Church, Churchville. Interment at the convenience of the family. Contributions may be made to Aurora House Comfort Care, P.O. Box 21, Spencerport, NY 14559 or to the Ogden Senior Center, 200 South Union St., Spencerport, NY 14559 in his memory.

Dear Marj & the others, We were traveling & live fulltime in our motorhome & missed hearing about your Dad's passing. I knew him & Les almost forever and looked up to your Dad, who offered us advice quite often, both on our farming activities and in Farm Bureau activities. He was a very good man. Your aunt Hester was my2nd & 3rd grade teacher, please pass on my condolances to her as well.

I was so sorry to hear about your Dad. I found out just the other day. I will miss him . He heald a special place in my heart, as did his wife, and the whole family.
I am glad that I could be of help in giving your family the memory of your dad and mom at the wedding.
That is a special memory for me also.
I enjoyed sitting and talking with him, walking with him to his "corn field". He made me laugh when he would say that so and so wasn't doing a good job with his garden.
Your Mom's devotion to him is something to learn from. They loved each other so much and it was evident.
I miss them both. My prayers are with you

The Smith family,
We are so sorry to hear, we didn't know till today. While we didn't know him personally, we have only heard what a wonderful man he was, along with Rita. Upon our meetings with some of the children, we can see what a fantastic legacy they have left as parents. We can only hope that the foundation that they built in this home will continue on with our family.
Our thoughts and prayers are with you...
