Richard Zwitzer Obituary

Zwitzer, Richard D.
Terrell, NC: Richard D. Zwitzer, 77, of Terrell, NC, went to his resting place on September 5, 2008.
He was born to Harry and Margaret Cooke Zwitzer on May 12, 1931. Survived by his wife of 36 years, Nanci Arnold Zwitzer. Dick was an outgoing man, father of three children, Jay Zwitzer, Andrew Zwitzer and Barbara Youngling and her husband, Ed; he was also more than a step-father to Steve Arnold (Dawn), Richard Arnold (Amy) and Christine LeVey (Dean). His wife and he enjoyed their children and grandchildren, Whitney and Rachel Zwitzer, Will Youngling, Samantha LiDestri, Timothy and Jordan Arnold, Melissa Arnold and Julia LeVey.
Following his service in the Air Force, Dick's life was one of competition. He competed with motorcycles winning hill climbs and motocross, road rally cars winning the 1971 MONY (Michigan Ohio and New York) series with his 1971 Volvo and going on to sail boats to win championships in New York with his Shark Catamaran "Cat Sass". From there he went to a Monohull Freedom 21, "Fire Drill" and again took the club championship at Canandaigua Yacht Club in New York's Finger Lakes.
While accomplishing this he served two terms on the Yacht Club Board of Governors, was active in the Kiwanis Club of Canandaigua helping with food drives, toys for tots, the spaghetti supper on Election Day and his favorite, conducting a monthly bingo game for senior citizens.
He raised the awareness of the Salvation Army when he served on their board of directors and got the Canandaigua Yacht Club involved by lining up bell ringers for their Christmas Kettle Drive. He also served a spaghetti supper to those bell ringers at his home on West Lake Road in Canandaigua, NY.
Dick was owner, operator of Best Motors in Rochester, NY. He had taken over the business from his father who began as a motorcycle repair and sales shop in the 50's. From there he went from motorcycles, including the beloved Indian, to autos. He sold and serviced several brands and became the exclusive Volvo dealer of Rochester, NY. In 1995 he sold his dealership and began a new career. He assisted his wife with her business of a mini storage facility. When they sold that business it was time to begin traveling. They brought a motor home and traveled the USA seeing all but four states. Each destination gave them more friends and memories. He was always ready for a challenge and gave each of them his very best effort. The challenge of brain cancer that struck nine months ago made him more determined but his body failed and he wanted so much to overcome that obstacle too. If anyone wishes to have the thrill of life that Dick Zwitzer had, they are only wishing for the best.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, September 9 at St. Therese Catholic Church with Rev. Donald M. Ward, S.J. officiating.
In lieu of flowers, contribute to the Hospice facility of your area, the Humane Society, Salvation Army or the American Cancer Society.
Cavin-Cook Funeral Home, Mooresville, is serving the Zwitzer family.

I will never forget Dick, he was a pleasure to know. He was one the most honest, generous people I ever met! His theory was if you told the truth you'd never had to remember what you told someone! He gave me advice on life that make me still think of him! If he was your friend you knew you had one true friend. Rest in Peace Dicky and know that you are missed and love.
Nanci I know this year has been tough. You are lucky to have friends and a great family that care about you and love you.

Hi, Nanci ~
Special days are harder when you have to experience them without the one you love most at your side. We will be thinking of you on your birthday tomorrow and praying that you can feel Dick's presence as he continues to watch over you. The "Z Mahn" will forever be in our thoughts, and those thoughts will bring a smile.
Love you!

Dear Nanci,

Dick continues to be in our hearts, on the golf course, in Riverwood, and with each RV that passes us on the highway! He was a wonderful man who was in our lives for too short a time.

Much love, Emily and John

Dear Nanci,
How can we ever forget Dick. When you work with someone nearly 25+ years they become friends and family. Every time I drive the country roads and pass a deer I think of the story told at the Memorial service at Canandaigua Yacht Club of how Dick sped thru country roads horn a blowin' here comes Dick get outta my way! Isn't it wonderful how memories keep loved ones near.
Take care Nanci.

I'll never forget: I ordered a Triumph
Spitfire from Dick and he called me on May 1st, 1963+/-informing me that said auto had arrived and I could pick it up...well I replied 'Dick, we have a terrible snow storm...look outside!' I insisted to wait out the storm and he informed me that he would fix me up with studded snow tires and that I would not have any trouble driving in that storm...yes Dick was quite a guy. I went to Madison High School with him and I am amused every time I read his entry in my year book...GOOD BY DICK and we will all meet again sometime.

Dear Aunt Nanci and family,

I was so sorry to hear about Uncle Dick. What an interesting life he had! I wish I had known him better. I talked with him at Uncle Mike's house the last two times we visited, and I remember he was very friendly. I'm sending love and my sincere best wishes to all of you.

Although we only met Dick once, Lisa and I felt as though we knew him as a friend and neighbor because of all the wonderful comments and loving thoughts expressed by his Arnold children and their children - Dick's grandchildren. Dick's memory will never be lost because as the old saying goes "To live in the hearts of others is to live forever".
