Sylvia O'Grady Obituary

O'Grady, Sylvia
Rochester: November 1, 2007, age 100, passed away peacefully after a brief illness. She was predeceased by her husband Thomas, mother Sylvia Green and special friend Laurence Kirwan.
She is survived by cousin Donald (Sharon) Burkel of Batavia, Jean Nichols of Bergen, Laura Michalek of Attica, members of the Foley family, godson Donald (Diane) Dowling and Frank (Karla) Geraci. She is also survived by countless friends who cherished being in the company of this gracious and intelligent woman.
She was born and educated in Batavia and attended Bryant and Stratton Business School in Buffalo. She moved to Rochester in 1929. Sylvia lived independently for fifty years after her husband's untimely death. She worked in the insurance industry for decades and retired as Office Manager for the Kirwan Agency.
Sylvia amazed her friends and family with her knowledge of current events and her storehouse of memories of the eleven decades covering her lifetime. She took great pride in the fact that she had voted (always Democratic) in every election since 1928. On her 100th birthday she received congratulatory messages from the president, the mayor and other dignitaries. Through her generosity she supported a wide variety of charities and her church.
Her family wishes to thank Adina Lopez of Pittsford for her many kindnesses and friendship shown to Sylvia and the staff of Highland Hospital for their support during her illness.
Friends may call Monday, 4-7 pm at the funeral home of ALVAH HALLORAN & SON, 2125 Chili Ave. Funeral Mass, Tuesday 12 pm at St. John the Evangelist Church, 553 Humboldt St. Entombment, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Contributions in Sylvia's name may be directed to the School of the Holy Childhood.

November 6, 2007

Sylvia O’Grady was a very special lady who meant a great deal to my father, Larry Kirwan and to our family. Sylvia’s talents were on display throughout her many years spent running the Kirwan Agency office and somehow she managed to keep her over-committed boss on track and always headed to the right place at the right time. I will always remember the special Christmas Eve dinners spent at my father’s house when Sylvia would join us each year dressed in her Sunday best attire. I remember Sylvia telling us how she felt as though she had “made it” and how pleased Tommy would be now that she had moved into her new East Ave. building with its own doorman. I will always remember and appreciate Sylvia’s genuine warmth and kindness and the love she showed for my father during his illness. She was a wonderful lady and someone who will certainly be missed. I am sorry that we were unable to attend the funeral service.

I'm signing this in memory of my mother, Marian A. Smith who, along with Sally Merz were old friends. I last saw Sylvia at the funeral for Sally and was inspired to see that she was still out and about. A lovely lady who still wore her heels at the age of 100!
