Sylvia Bloom Obituary

Bloom, Sylvia Gray
Rochester: Died on November 11, 2007. She was a lifelong resident of Rochester, who celebrated her 90th birthday in September. She was married to Samuel W. Bloom of Rochester for 52 years. He predeceased her in 1996. She is survived by her children, Terry Edelstein of South Glastonbury, Connecticut, William R. Bloom of Miami, Florida; three grandchildren and a granddaughter-in-law; David Edelstein and his wife Corinne Drumheller of Seattle, Washington, Philip I. Bloom of Redwood, California and Serena E. Bloom of Gainesville, Florida. A granddaughter Deborah Tracy Edelstein predeceased her in 1993. She was the oldest of seven siblings all of whom reside in Rochester, Evelyn Gray, Seymour & Beverly Gray, David & Miriam Gray, Marvin & Barbara Gray, Louis & Maryann Gray and Dolores Schwartz; brother-in-law & sisters-in-law, Ronald Bloom & Dolores King of New York City, Dr. Helen Rivlin of Falmouth, Massachusetts; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews and cousins. She was the daughter of Isaac Gray and Lena Rubin Gray.
She graduated from the University of Rochester with a Doctorate in Education where she also earned her Bachelor's and Master's degrees. She was the Co-Director of the JY Seneca Lake Camp (where she was known as Ginger); an elementary school teacher for the Rochester City School District and the Assistant Director of the Manpower Training Program. She and her husband were active in retired teacher's organizations.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to the Deborah Tracy Edelstein Scholarship Fund, Middlebury College, Middlebury, VT. 05753 (http://www.middlebury.edu/supporting) in her memory.
The family invites you to a funeral service at Temple B'rith Kodesh (2131 Elmwood Ave.) on Tuesday, November 13 at 12 Noon. Interment, Mt. Hope Cemetery. Following the burial, family and friends are invited to a reception at the Jewish Home of Rochester, (2021 Winton Road S.) from 2-4 PM. A period of mourning will continue at 9 Linden Cove, Pittsford Tuesday from 6:30 - 8:30 PM. For directions or to leave a message of condolence, please visit:
