Lindsay, Robert Bruce Jr.
Ponte Vedre Beach, FL: Aged 90, died November 9th 2007, peacefully at his home, 301 Pablo Road, Ponte Vedre Beach, FL. "Bob" Lindsay was born May 16th 1917, the son of R. Bruce Lindsay, youngest son of Alexander M. Lindsay, one of the founders of Rochester's Sibley's Department Stores, and Gladys Newcomb Gibson Lindsay, of Savannah GA. He graduated Choate School, and Yale University Class of 1939. He had a lifelong interest in the Classics and Horticulture. During World War II he served as a 1st Lieutenant in the Army. In 1946, he married Catharine Dalton Pritchard of Birmingham AL (the late Catharine Rowntree). The family lived in Penfield where Bob served as President of the School Board for several terms. He has 4 children and 3 grandchildren: R. Bruce Lindsay III; Catherine Lindsay Hawks & her children Haywood Hawks, and Catharine P. Hawks (of Rochester); Shelton C. Lindsay and his wife Linda M. Lindsay and grandson Shelton P. Lindsay, of Rhinebeck NY; and son Donald Gibson Lindsay of Fort Lauderdale, FL. He was a manager for Sibley's until it was sold out of his family. Thereafter, he purchased and ran the John J. Soble Lumber Company, distributor for rare wholesale hardwoods. One of his fondest accomplishments was supplying this wood for artists Wendell Castle, and his students at the School of American Craftsmen at R.I.T. He was a member of the Rochester and Tortola B. V. I. Rotary. He believed deeply in education and was a Paul Harris Fellow supporting international student exchanges and a strong supporter of Yale University.
In retirement, Bob built 2 houses in Tortola B.V.I. and enjoyed sailing on Lake Ontario and in the B.V.I. In 1984, he remarried at his home in Tortola to Caroline Marsh of Columbus OH. Together they enjoyed participation in the Botanic Garden of the B.V.I. and the American Horticultural Society where Caroline was President. He was the longest continuous member of the Arnold Arboretum. In 1998 they moved to Jacksonville, FL. In addition to his children and grandchildren, Bob Lindsay is survived by his 3rd wife Carolyn and her 4 daughters, Dr. Kennan Marsh, Lake Forest, IL, Mrs. Sarah Schweitzer, Libertyville, IL; Ms. Mary Marsh, Washington, DC, Mrs. Emily Szabo, Dublin, Oh.
A Rochester gathering for family and friends is scheduled Thursday December 6th at 11:30 am until 2:00 pm at the Kearns Library of the Genesee Valley Club where he was a lifelong member. A Florida gathering to celebrate Mr. Lindsay's life will be held at the Ponte Vedre Inn & Club, Golf Club December 8th 2007 from 3:00 pm until 5:00 pm. The family requests in lieu of flowers that contributions be sent to Planned Parenthood of Rochester in Mr. Lindsay's memory.
