Elizabeth Kumbo "Betty" Tiller

Elizabeth Tiller Obituary

Tiller, Elizabeth Kumbo "Betty"
Rochester: Quietly passed away at the age of 90, on Sunday, November 4, 2007, in Rochester, New York. Born on July 24, 1917, in St. Louis, Missouri, Mrs. Tiller moved to Rochester after surviving the terrible influenza pandemic of 1918. Upstate New York became her lifelong home, where she graduated from West High in 1935, and married Anton J. Tiller (Tony) in July of 1941. Betty and Tony raised four sons, eventually moving to Webster, where Tony died in 1992. Betty is survived by her sons Brian, Craig, Steve, and Kerry.
Mrs. Tiller was a remarkably bright individual, a dedicated mother, and a gifted and talented singer. Her favorite activities included traveling across the U.S. with her family, a heated game of scrabble with family, and a good library. An avid reader until her death, she could read half a dozen books in a matter of weeks. Betty and Tony were charter members of the United Church of Christ, Congregational, in Webster, where Betty was a solo soprano in the choir for three decades. She also enjoyed being an active member of the church hand-bell choir. After a brief but enjoyable time living in North Carolina in the past few years, Betty relocated to her beloved Upstate New York, where she said she missed the white winters and the fall colors. Mrs. Tiller is also survived by four grandchildren, Sarah, Lori, Megan, and Russ; and three great-grandchildren, Angie, Maggie, and Kate.

"There is a place in the heart
no suffering destroys,
Where the young voices laugh and
the old tunes play on,
Where all our cares are mended
in small secret joys."
