Robert Laurer Obituary

Laurer, Robert A.
Manhattan: Born on March 10, 1921, passed away on October 29, 2007, of natural causes. A Rochester native, he was the beloved son of the late Charles and Caroline Laurer. He is survived by his sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and Richard Streb; nieces, Rosanna McMillan and Joan Wigg; nephews, Calvin Hansis, Richard, Joseph, Karl and Robert Laurer; dear friend, Michael Lynch. He was the brother of the late Karl, Clarence, Joseph and Loretta Laurer and Caroline Englert. He earned his BA in Fine Arts from the University of Rochester and advanced degrees in Art History from Harvard University. He volunteered for the Army during World War II and served in the European Theater, seeing action in northern France, Belgium, Holland and Germany. He was awarded many honors, including the Bronze Star for bravery under enemy fire. As a Professor of Art History, he taught at the University of Colorado, the University of Arkansas and Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey. He was also a former Assistant Director of The American Craft Museum in New York City in the mid fifty's, where he was responsible for many exhibitions including three major shows: Louis Comfort Tiffany, Contemporary European Crafts and Wharton Esherick. He spent a lifetime in the study and pursuit of Art and Literature. An accomplished artist himself, his work has been in many exhibitions, including shows at Thy Pyramid Art Center in Rochester and The Goddard Riverside Senior Center in New York City. He is the author of a large amount of poetry, short stories and scholastic essays.
Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Saturday, December 1st, 2007, 11 AM, at Holy Trinity Church, 1460 Ridge Road, Webster. Interment will follow with Military Honors at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations to Parkinson's or Alzheimer's Foundations are encouraged.
