Dorothy Fortune Obituary

Fortune, Dorothy
Margaret (nee Decker)
Hendersonville, NC,-Sackets Harbor, NY: 89, formerly of Rochester, died peacefully at home on December 6, 2007 in the loving care of hospice, her devoted family and caregivers.
James, her childhood sweetheart and husband of nearly sixty years, passed away in 2000. They leave a proud legacy of six children; thirteen grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; and two sisters-in-law.
Dorothy and Jim moved to Rochester in 1972 when he began his career as Treasurer/Financial Vice-President with the Genesee Brewing Company. Dorothy became an active volunteer for her parish, St. Thomas More, and the Rochester Guild for Crippled Children. She enjoyed her membership in garden clubs, The Chatterbox Club, and the Embroiderers Guild of America. Upon Jim's retirement in 1980, they moved to Hendersonville, NC, and happily spent each summer at Campbell's Point in Sackets Harbor, NY, where the entire family gathers each year.
With an innate sense of beauty and her grandmother's practicality, Dorothy used her appreciation for antiques and her flair for gardening and needlework to raise homemaking and hospitality to an art. She will be remembered for her warmth and wisdom, strength and spirit, her faith, and above all, for the love she so beautifully shared with all those who hold her close to their hearts.
A funeral mass will be celebrated at St. Andrews Church in Sackets Harbor, NY on Monday, December 10, at 11 a.m. The family will receive guests at St. Andrews one hour prior to the service. Arrangements are being conducted by Cummings Funeral Service of Watertown, NY. Contributions may be made in her memory to Hospice of Jefferson County, 425 Washington St., Watertown, NY 13601.
