White, Jim
Veteran DU off-Ice Hockey Official
James L. White (known as Jimmy or Jimbo to his friends), 65, died at home after a long illness, on November 7, 2008. Jim was born in Pittsburgh, PA to James L. White, Sr., and Helen Barnett White on June 28, 1943. He spent his early years in Westport, CT and graduated from Fairfield County Day School in 1959, when his family moved to Denver. In 1962, Jim graduated from Fountain Valley School of Colorado; he was called a "devoted alum and lovely man" by the School's Director of Alumni Relations. Jim graduated from the University of Colorado at Denver (UCD) with a BA in Sociology, in 1969. In 1970, he married Anita Richardson, whom he met at UCD. Jim and Anita had one son, Chris, who was born in 1975. Chris said he has lost not only his father, but his "best friend."
Jim worked as a motor vehicle hearings officer for the Colorado Department of Revenue and as a service representative for the US Internal Revenue Service. He coached soccer for the Colorado Youth Soccer Association, serving as the coach for the Skyline Ottawa team for many years. Some of his former players still call him "Coach." His greatest love, besides his family and many friends, was the hockey program at the University of Denver. Jim served as the chief off-ice official for the University for more than thirty years. He instituted the annual hockey parents' weekend more than twenty years ago, and had served as chairman of this affair for 23 years. The University presented Jim with a community service award for his many years of volunteer work in support of the hockey program. He was extremely knowledgeable about college hockey and maintained long-standing friendships with former players, players' parents, coaches, athletic directors, and media representatives, many of whom have written to Anita and Chris about how much they valued Jim's friendship and hockey knowledge. Until his recent illness, Jim had not missed a DU home game for 34 years. The hockey program presented a tribute to Jim during the November 21st game. Jim and Chris were also devoted and enthusiastic Red Sox fans and they enjoyed the team's success in recent years.
Jim is survived and sorely missed by his wife, Anita; his son, Chris, daughter-in-law, Elia, and grandson, Andrewall of Denver; as well as by his brother, Tom, of Flagstaff, AZ. Donations may be sent to the hockey program at the University of Denver or to Sustainable Harvest International, 779 North Bend Road, Surry, ME 04684 (www.sustainableharvest.org). Anita and Chris thank Jim's many friends who have contacted them, sent emails, written notes and tributes. They recognize that many will miss their kind and loving friend.
A memorial service will be held from 1-4 PM on Saturday, December 27, in the Gottesfeld Room on the 4th floor of Magness Arena, on the University of Denver Campus. The family asks that you come prepared to share any stories and memories you have of Jim. Refreshments will be served.

We are so sorry for your loss. Jim was a wonderful person and we will miss his smile, sense of humor, and kindness. I have many good memories of soccer, hockey, band activities and parties. We will miss him.

How I will miss Mr. White. He was a true gentleman and my favorite college hockey fan.
