Beth Stohl Obituary

Beth (Betty) Burton Stohl 1916 ~ 2008 Beth (Betty) Burton Stohl passed away peacefully in her sleep, Friday, June 13th, three days before her 92nd birthday. She was born June 16, 1916, in Salt Lake City, to Carl Cushing and Ella Christopherson Burton. Betty lived a full and happy life. We will all miss her but she left us a wonderful legacy. Betty grew up in Salt Lake City, attended Highland Park Elementary, Irving Junior High and South High School. She went to BYU and later graduated from the University of Utah where she affiliated with Delta Gamma Sorority. She attended graduate school at New York University where she got a masters degree in Business and Retailing. She worked at Lord and Taylor and later moved back to Salt Lake City, where she became the personnel manager at the downtown Keith O'Brien department store. It was at Keith O'Brien where her boss, Dave Ellison, introduced her to his friend Clark Stohl. They fell in love quickly and married in the Salt Lake Temple, February 13, 1940. Betty and Clark moved to San Francisco where Clark worked for the U.S. Mint. They moved back to Salt Lake and lived in the Highland Park area where they raised their family on the corner of Stratford Avenue and Beverly Street. An amazing homemaker, she will be best remembered for her big batches of sweet rolls, beautiful pies, homemade chile sauce and mustard pickle, all of which she shared generously with others. Everyone loved her roast beef dinners on Sunday afternoons. She sewed dresses for her daughters and knit Christmas stockings for children and grandchildren. Our Dad always said Mom could do more things well than anyone he knew and it was true. She could play Chopin on the piano, teach gospel doctrine, host a dinner party with ease, keep a greenhouse full of plants thriving and sing dozens of fun songs to her children and grandchildren. She loved her friends and belonged to several clubs, as did many of the women in her era. She was a member of Classics Club, Bridge Club and Economy Club. She and Clark belonged to "Just-A-Mere's," a dinner group of their dearest friends. Betty loved being a Latter-day Saint and read The Book of Mormon faithfully. She served in her church in so many ways. Her most memorable calling was with her husband, Clark, serving as Directors of Church Hosting for 14 years. They were able to meet interesting people from all over the world. Betty was honored to become friends with the Queen of Thailand and thought Ronald Reagan was very handsome. Betty wrote about her life in a little book called, "Forget Me Not." We won't forget you Mom, Granny and Great Granny. Your life will forever inspire us to be more and do more. She is survived by six of her seven children, Burton (Marilyn) Stohl, Katie (Ellis) Ivory, Sara (Roger) Boyer, Martha (Paul) Gardiner, Amy (Dick) Moffat and Laura (Robert) Chipman; daughter, Jennis Elizabeth, died in an auto accident at age two. Betty was proud to tell everyone of her 33 grandchildren and her 79 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her two sisters, Kathryn (Frank) Everett and Jane (Keith) Graham. Special thanks to Vicky Booth, Mom's dear friend and devoted care-giver. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, June 17, 12:00 Noon, at the Monument Park 17th Ward, 2975 Crestview Drive. Friends and family may call at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary, 2350 East 1300 South, Monday evening from 6 - 8 p.m., or at the church one hour prior to the funeral service. Dear Katie, Marybeth Cannon shared information with me about your mom's passing. I think that means you are an orphan now like me. It seems like your dad has been gone for a few years. Please forgive me if my memory fails me. I have such fond memories of our teenage years. I didn't know your mother well, but I knew her through you. I know she was a woman worthy of much respect. It is a different life when both parents are beyond the veil. I know they are still with me, but not being able to touch and giggle is greatly missed. I care about tender feelings you must have as you adjust to a new situation. Living into the 90's is great. My Dad was 92, my mom 90. The obituary was fun to read. I could hear your voice in some of it. Please know that you will always hold a loving place in my heart. God be with you especially now. Love, Cindy Richmond Maw

Dear Katie,

Please accept our love and sympathy at the death of your beautiful Mother. What a lovely, gracious woman! What an example of a life well lived. We wish we had known your Mother, but we know you and realize that you possess many of her excellent qualities.

I was at the BYU Women's Conference session where you and Ellis spoke about parenting adult children. I was with two daughters and a granddaughter, but we were in the overflow room so were unable to see you. Thank you for an excellent presentation! You have been a great example and influence in my life. With Love, Pat Bevan

My thoughts are flooded with memories of growing up across the street from the Stohl's. What a blessing it has been to be nurtured by both Clark and Betty as a young person and later in life, to be counted as their friend. Our love and best wishes to all.

I loved Betty and Clark, who were like 2nd parents to me while I grew up, living across the street. I will remember Betty in her kitchen cooking, I'll remember her wonderful smile, her infectious laughter, and most of all, her generous spirit. She was indeed, a gracious woman with a delightful sense of fun. How blessed all of us who grew up in the Stratford Ward and knew Betty were.

In addition to all the fine things mentioned in her obituary, I would add one more: Betty gave me and the other young women of Stratford Ward a perfect example of what a woman could and should be. I am grateful for her part in my impressionable teen years!

I met "Sister Stohl", as I knew her then, when I was sixteen. Because of the immediate hospitality of the Stohl family I was invited to their cabin overnight and thereafter became best friends with their daughter Sara. I knew she was a great lady, but I so much enjoyed learning more about her many accomplishments in the obituary. What a grand reunion she will have now with her wonderful husband. The gospel sheds a special light on the passing of such a faithful lady. She will surely be missed by her family who fortunately have beautiful memories of her life. Her example was probably her best gift to them.

We were surprised and saddened to learn of the passing of Aunt Betty, but rejoice in the greatness of her life and her reunion with Uncle Clark. We are grateful for rich memories of our times with them and for your wonderful, supportive family. We send our love, sympathy and best wishes to all of you.

My fondest memories of my youth included the Highland Park Ward and my Bishop Burton and his family. I never forget to thank God for the great privilege of growing up in that great Ward. Love to Betty' survivors.

To the Stohl Family
I have so enjoyed through my life the acquaintance with so many wonderful people due to my parents' friendships. You Stohl girls and later becoming acquainted with Burton, thru Margie, are among these wonderful people.
I enjoyed reading your mother's obituary and what a grand lady she was. What can hardly be captured in words is her gracious, friendly warmth and interest in others. I always loved seeing and visiting with her. You are all a wonderful reflection of her. I know that Royal, my sister Mary, and brothers Joe and Ted would express fond memories and condolences to all of you.
Love, Laura Cowley Hansen

My condolences to all the Stohl family. It was an honor to grow up around the Stohls and the world has lost a truly gracious, and I must add, humorous, lady. I have many fond memories of your mom...along with a couple of great recipies she gave my mom. Betty Stohl was a true treasure and delight, someone who made the world a nicer place to live!
