Harry Lee Obituary

Harry L. Lee 1919 ~ 2006 Harry L. Lee, passed away peacefully Wednesday, May 17, 2006, at the age of 87. He was born May 15, 1919 in Salt Lake City to Harry Lincoln and Effie Clark Lee. Harry is preceded in death by his beloved wife of 24 years, Mary Ballen Lee; his sister, Frances Blate of Arlington, Virginia; and his parents. In 1962, this dashing, blue-eyed bachelor won the heart of a lovely lady named Mary Ballen, and they married at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Salt Lake City. Much later, they were inspired to design and build their dream home, with panoramic views of the mountains and the city. Harry and Mary enjoyed an active social schedule. They entertained frequently with style and grace and both were fond of the Utah arts, including the symphony and the ballet. Harry was an avid reader and his knowledge of criminology and history was quite impressive. He was very proud to be a direct descendant of General Robert E. Lee. Harry and Mary shared an incredible zest for travel and they took much pleasure in planning their itineraries abroad. They visited many favorite European destinations during their marriage and always returned with lively travel tales. Harry's most memorable trip included taking his Croatian mother-in-law back to visit her homeland. He absolutely adored Mary's mother "Anna." Harry's colorful and rewarding career as a Special Agent for the FBI spanned many years, with assignments in Las Vegas, Atlanta, and Salt Lake City. His most prolific case in the mid 1960's involved working in Mississippi for several months, attempting to locate three missing civil rights workers. This case was later profiled in the movie "Mississippi Burning." Harry was fond of his peers in the Bureau and many long-lasting friendships were formed. Harry enjoyed "simplicity," a challenging crossword puzzle, a good cup of coffee, and friendly conversation. He lived a full, great life. His wisdom, humor, loyalty, kindness, and generosity touched many lives. Undoubtedly, Harry's greatest passion was his unending love for his beautiful bride, Mary Lee. Family and friends would like to thank all of Harry's caregivers for their compassion and excellent care. Graveside services will be held Wednesday, 11:00 a.m. at Murray City Cemetery, 5490 South Vine. Friends may call Wednesday from 9:30 a.m. - 10:30 a.m. at Neil O'Donnell and Sons Mortuary, 372 East 100 South. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Utah Symphony and Opera, Catholic Community Services, and the Salvation Army.

I always enjoyed visiting my neighbors, Mr. and Mrs. Lee, when I was a kid. They were so kind and would always welcome us neighbor kids into their home for a chat, and often a treat! It was always fun to talk with them, and I also had fun in their back yard searching for lizards! We have missed Mary for many years and now we will miss Harry as well. They were wonderful friends and neighbors.
