Joan Derrick Olsen

Joan Olsen Obituary

Joan Derrick Olsen 11/11/35 ~ 02/03/06 Our beloved wife, mother, sister, grandmother and friend, Joan Derrick Olsen, passed from her earthly estate Friday, February 3, 2006 at home in American Fork. Joan was devoted to her family and loved her husband, children, and grandchildren. She was known for her cheerfulness, friendliness, love, and strong testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ. She was an avid storyteller and loved telling family and gospel stories. Her love for her ancestors was apparent in her genealogy and temple work. She worked in the Relief Society for many years. The gift of music was apparent in the Olsen home as she taught her children to love music. Joan played the piano and organ in church for over 50 years. She loved children and enjoyed serving in the Cub Scout and Primary organizations. She is deeply loved and will be missed by all. Joan was born November 11, 1935 in Logan, Utah to Irven Glade Derrick and Eva Peterson. She married her eternal sweetheart, Albert Lamoin Olsen, Jr., August 17, 1955 in the Salt Lake Temple. Joan was preceded in death by her parents; her sister, Dixie Jean Derrick; and her brother, Paul Irven Derrick (Loretta). She is survived by her husband of 50 years, Albert Lamoin; her sister, Sylvia Marie Moody (Gordon); five children, Jan Marie Young (Kevin), Carolyn Ann Miles (Kerry), Alan Lee Olsen (Susan), Arlen Lynn Olsen (Laurinda), and Albert Lamoin Olsen, III (Michelle). She is also survived by 29 grandchildren. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 7, 2006, 10:00 a.m. at the Larkin Mortuary Chapel, 260 East South Temple Street, Salt Lake City. A public viewing will be held between 9:00-9:45 a.m. at the Larkin Mortuary. Internment will follow the services at Wasatch Lawn Memorial Park, 3401 South Highland Drive. "When this life is over my greatest desire is to be with my children and my grandchildren - all of them with this wonderful feeling of content - to look back over our lives and know that we have done the best we could and to know that He will forgive our failings and weaknesses and take care of those around us who have not yet learned this charity or the pure love of Christ in their lives. I leave my testimony and my love of music to my family. Music is that which uplifts and brings peace and contentment to my soul. Much of our church music is taken from the scriptures."

I have loved the time I spent in the Olsen's home. Grandma Joan was always so good to me with all of the sunday dinners I went to with Cherie. I especially remember a wonderful thanksgiving weekend we spend at thier home, Joan made me feel like I was really with my family for thanksgiving. She had a knack for loving everyone.

My deepest sympathy to the Olsen family. I only met Joan a few times but have come to know Arlen & Laurinda over the last 13 years and they are wonderful, raising a good family. Joan was always kind and warm when she visited. One could see how proud she was of her family which also includes the Derricks and the Dawsons out here in NY. My prayers are with you.

Sincerely,

Julie Andrew

I work with Arlen in NY. This past general conference I came out with him to interview BYU law students for potential employment. We stayed with Joan and Al and I was extremely impressed by their gracious hospitality; especially Joan who made every effort to help me feel as comfortable as possible while I stayed in her home. In my short time knowing her, she displayed an evident Christlike desire to help me feel welcome and accepted. I am sure that others now are extending the same Christlike display of kindness to her as she moves on to her next phase of eternal progression.

Dear Lamoin & family,

I am Joan's cousin, Judy (Shepherd) Fulks. I was saddened to hear of Joan's passing and I offer my condolences to her loved ones. I know you will miss her but she will always live in your hearts until you are together again.

I wish I could be with you tomorrow at Joan's funeral. I am currently taking strong pain medications which deters my driving. Please know that my heart and my prayers will be with you all.

May you find comfort knowing that Joan is with God.

Lamoine and Children. Oh, how I loved her. I have many many fond memories and a lot of pictures of our times together. Joan has been my friend since we both were 16. She was my room mate at BYU. Oh, how I wish I could say I kept in touch with her as I should. "If Only", will be with me forever..I am sorry, so sorry. Lamoine, please forgive me. What a dear friend she was to me. Love you Lamoine!! God bless you with strength and comfort and the same for your children.

To Lamoin & family,

It has been my privilege to be associated with your family through my deep friendship with Dixie over these many years. I remember fondly experiences with you, Joan, and other family members. Joan was a wonderful example of selfless love. Indeed, she is an “elect lady.” I trust she is having a joyous reunion with Dixie, Paul, her parents and other loved ones.

I extend my love and condolences to you who are left behind. It is a difficult adjustment and may our Father in Heaven continue to put His arms around you.

Love, Bev

You were a special friend to me and my girls. Since moving in to American Fork, I so enjoyed your company and sitting by you at church. I will always cherish my visit to your home with my daughter Sara last Monday. Listening to your story of how you met your husband amongst other memorable stories. Your home was always filled with love for anyone who would enter it . You will be truly missed by our family.

My Grandmother was a very special lady. I loved to visit her home, to hear her stories. Without fail each visit I knew I would hear about how I talked nonstop all the way from southern California to Washington when I was three. May angels lead you home Grandma. I hope to live my life to see and live with you again.

I never met you but my daughter did. Jessica, you took her and your grandson John to the Tabernacle Choir at Christmas. She told me that she had just had the best time with her friend John and his amazing Grandparents. God bless you all. Kim Corless (Jessica's mum England UK)
