Randy Sutherland Obituary

Randy W. Sutherland "Live Strong" Our beloved father, husband, son, grandpa and friend, Randy Wayne Sutherland, 47, returned peacefully to our Heavenly Father's open arms on February 26, 2006. He passed away due to complications from ALS (Lou Gehrig's Disease). He was the youngest child born to Ruth and Richard Sutherland on Sept. 14, 1958, in Salt Lake City, UT. He attended Olympus High School. He earned his Eagle Scout. He served an LDS mission in Dallas, Texas. He received his Bachelors Degree in Accounting from Park College. On Feb. 12, 1982, he married his loving wife, Dorothy Bullock, in the Jordan River Temple and was blessed with four wonderful children. He served proudly in the Air Force for eight years. He currently was employed at Alder's Sales Corp. as their Controller. He was an active member of the LDS church and served in many callings, which he loved. His passion the last few years was bicycling. He loved the outdoors and loved being with the Bonneville Bicycle Touring Club. In 2004, he rode over 6,000 miles on his bike. One year ago he surprised his family with an extreme home makeover with tremendous help and love from our wonderful community so that his family would be well taken care of in the future. Since the makeover Randy has enjoyed traveling from coast to coast with his family going to places such as Hawaii, New York, Niagara Falls, Nauvoo, San Francisco and Denver, making the most of each precious moment he had left. Randy is survived by his wife, Dorothy, children, Anne (Vance) Lee, Jacob, Kyle, Kaitlyn and grandson, Justin Lee, Ruth Sutherland, mother; Peg (Steve) Goff, Rick (Maureen) Sutherland, Pam Sutherland, brother and sisters and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by Richard Sutherland, father. The family wishes to thank Dr. Mark Bromberg, Barbara Miano and Staff at the U of U ALS Clinic, Dr. Todd Eberhard and staff at Cottonwood Hospital and all those at the wonderful ALS Support Group. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to The Sutherland Children Trust Fund at any Wells Fargo Bank. Dear Dorothy and Family--I didn't know Randy well, but I will hold dear our brief acquaintance. We met on a short 120 mile BBTC ride to the Golden Spike Monument in 2004. We were both having a "bad day" dealing with headwinds, mechanical problems, and fatigue. I was amazed at Randy's resilience and his ability to smile and put our situation in perspective. We worked together to get home that day. My guess is Randy handled his diagnosis and the challenges that followed with the same character I saw during our ride--putting the needs of others ahead of his own suffering and smiling through adversity. My condolences for you tremendous loss.

I am deeply sorry for your loss. I didn't know Randy very well but I did get the chance to meet him one morning after it had snowed and I was driving by on the way to take my kids to school and he had fallen getting in his van. That was the first time that I was honored to actually meet Randy. My husband and I went over later that day and introduced ourselves. From that day on I thought about your family and was glad I took the long way to school that day. That day made me feel like an angel, and that is exactly where Randy is is with the angels, looking down upon your family and he will protect you always.

I grew up with Randy in the Rosecrest 2nd ward. In fact, Dick, Randys father was my cubmaster and scoutmaster for a time. I learned alot from the Sutherland family and although I didn't realize it at the time Randy has had an impact on my life. Randy was always the one to teach by example and the kindness he showed was a lesson we could all take to heart. I last saw Randy in downtown Salt Lake and he was in great spirit with that smile that never seemed to stop. I am honored to have known Randy.

Sorry for your loss. I lived in the Rosecrest 2nd Ward when Randy was a teanager. I was one of the youth leaders in the Ward and hope that my association with Randy had some effect on his accomplishments during his life. I am thankful to have known him. Lord bless you all at this time of loss.
