Richard MacKenna Obituary

Richard G. MacKenna of Leominster; 90 LEOMINSTER Richard Gardner MacKenna, 90, formerly of Leominster Rd., Lunenburg, died Monday, Nov. 17, at the Highlands in Fitchburg. He was born in Worcester, on Aug. 29, 1918, a son of the late Bernard and Olive (Titus) MacKenna and was brought up in Shrewsbury where he graduated from Shrewsbury High School in 1937. He also attended Becker Junior College. Mr. MacKenna joined the U.S. Army during WWII where he served in the European Theater and was wounded in the Battle of the Bulge. He worked as a machinist for 35 years at the Bay State Stamping Co. in Worcester and then as a foreman at the former Starett Tool Company in Athol for eight years. Following his retirement he worked for several years as a security guard at the Fitchburg Art Museum retiring in 2003. Dick was a member of Christ Church in Fitchburg where he sang in the choir. He was also a member of the Alden Astronomical Society and enjoyed gardening, reading music and boating. He along with his wife Mimi enjoyed several elder hostel trips. He leaves his wife, Miriam C. Cheesman MacKenna of Leominster, a son, Douglas G. MacKenna of Auburn; three grandchildren, Christopher MacKenna, Allyson MacKenna and Bethany Strothers all of Auburn. He is predeceased by his first wife, Harriet (Sargent) MacKenna who died in 1978 and his second wife, Barbara (Kemp) MacKenna who died in 1989. MACKENNA The funeral will be held on Saturday, Nov. 22, at 10:00 a.m. in Christ Church, 569 Main St., Fitchburg. Burial will be held privately in the South Cemetery in Lunenburg, at the convenience of the family. Calling hours will be held on Friday, Nov. 21 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. in the Lunenburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 763 Massachusetts Ave. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Christ Church Organ Restoration Fund, 569 Main St., Fitchburg, MA 01420. www.masciarellifamilyfuneralhomes.net.
