Edith Abbott Obituary

Edith 'Edie' N. Abbott former Winchendon schoolteacher; 103 GARDNER Edith "Edie" N. (Woollacott) Abbott, 103, died Friday morning, in Wachusett Manor Nursing Home, Gardner, after a brief illness. Edie was born in Fitchburg, November 11, 1905, the 11th child of John and Nora (Newcombe) Woollacott. She was remembered as a beautiful little girl with bright brown eyes and dark brown curls. Edie was raised in her family home until she graduated from Fitchburg Normal School. After graduation, she pursued a long career in teaching, until her retirement in 1969 from the Tucker School in Winchendon. In 1930, she married Andral L. Russell, who died in 1973. She later married Celian H. Abbott, who died in 1990. She retired to the Woodward Home in Keene, NH in 1992. When she was married to Andral, Edie, her sister-in-law, Doris, and other members of the Russell family ran the day to day operations of Camp Chanrudoma, a camp ground that over 60 children would attend every summer. Edie is a longtime member of the United Parish of Winchendon. She was a member of the United Parish Women's Fellowship, a lifelong member of the Order of The Eastern Star, Jessamine Chapter, and the local Garden Club. Edie will be remembered as a gracious lady who endured to the end with grace and dignity. She was loved and respected by all who knew her. When meeting her maker she will surely hear "well done thou good and faithful servant." Edie is survived by one son, Richard A Russell and his wife, Janet, of Winchendon; 4 grandchildren; Andrea, Rick, Scott, and Katrina Russell; one step-son; William Abbott and his wife, Margot of Keene, NH, 6 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was a kind and warm hearted woman who brought joy and love to soo many people in her 103 years. I am very glad that I was able to make it up there to see her once again and am sure she is happy with the Lord. She will be deeply missed as a wonderful person, a great grandmother and great-great grandmother.

I remember our Dear Great Aunt Edie so very well. I recall birthday parties for Great Grandfather Woollacott at the camp in Winchendon. Edie always had beautiful white hair . . . all the years I knew her. She lived a magnificent life. We all adored her. The last of that generation of Woollacotts . . . each and every one dear and special and missed. My mother, Ardath, had special feelings for Edie . . . as did we all.
