G. Whitcomb Obituary

G. Barry Whitcomb lifelong Lunenburg resident; 86 Lunenburg G. Barry Whitcomb, 86, of Lunenburg, died Sunday, December 7, 2008 in the Keystone Center in Leominster. He was born in Fitchburg, on April 24, 1922 a son of the late, Ralph and Mignon (Bickford) Whitcomb and has lived in Lunenburg all of his life and was very proud of the fact that he was a ninth generation resident of the Town. He was a graduate of Lunenburg High School with the class of 1941. Mr. Whitcomb worked at Simonds Saw and Steel in Fitchburg for 30 years, retiring in 1984. He also served on the Lunenburg Police Department from 1947 to 1968. He was very active in Town affairs throughout his adult life; he served as moderator for the Lunenburg Water Department for 39 years, as well as the Board of Assessors and was the current Cemetery Commissioner. His true love was the Historical Society where he worked tirelessly throughout the years. He served as curator and was the driving force behind the building of its existing location. He was an avid gardener and enjoyed traveling throughout the Country visiting the National Parks. His wife, Eleanor (Burrill) Whitcomb died in 2000. He leaves a daughter, Amy W. Ricciuti of Lunenburg; a son, Charles B. Whitcomb of Fresno, CA; a sister, Nancy Deming of Phillipston; three grandchildren, Ross J. Ricciuti and Lee W. Ricciuti both of Lunenburg and Emmeline E. Whitcomb of Fresno, CA and many nephews and nieces. Besides his wife he is predeceased by a sister, Marie Tupper Smith. WHITCOMB Calling hours will be held in the Lunenburg Chapel of the Sawyer-Miller-Masciarelli Funeral Homes, 763 Massachusetts Ave, on Monday, December 15, from 4 to 7pm. Burial will be in the North Cemetery at the convenience of the family. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Lunenburg Historical Society, 10 School St., Lunenburg, MA 01462. www.masciarellifamilyfuneralhomes.net

I am sorry for the loss of G. Barry and will miss his great wealth of local historical knowledge. I will also miss seeing him at the Historical Commission meetings where he stood his ground about the "red" book not being correct! He is missed.
