Irena Sendler Obituary

Published by Legacy Remembers on May 12, 2008.
WARSAW, Poland (AP) - Irena Sendler - a Polish social worker who helped save some 2,500 Jewish children from the Nazis by smuggling them out of the Warsaw Ghetto and giving them false identities - has died. She was 98.

Sendler died at a Warsaw hospital on Monday morning, her daughter, Janina Zgrzembska, told The Associated Press. She had been hospitalized since last month with pneumonia.

Sendler was serving as a social worker with the city's welfare department during World War II when she masterminded the risky rescue operations of Jewish children from the Warsaw Ghetto during Nazi Germany's brutal World War II occupation.

Records show that Sendler's team of some 20 people saved nearly 2,500 children from the Warsaw Ghetto between October 1940 and April 1943, when the Nazis burned the ghetto, shooting the residents or sending them to death camps.

"A great person has died - a person with a great heart, with great organizational talents, a person who always stood on the side of the weak," Marek Edelman, the last surviving leader of the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto uprising, told TVN24 television.

Under the pretext of inspecting the ghetto's sanitary conditions during a typhoid outbreak, Sendler and her assistants went inside in search of children who could be smuggled out and given a chance of survival by living as Catholics.

Babies and small children were smuggled out in ambulances and in trams, sometimes wrapped up as packages. Teenagers escaped by joining teams of workers forced to labor outside the ghetto. They were placed in families, orphanages, hospitals or convents.

In hopes of one day uniting the children with their families - most of whom perished in the Nazis' death camps - Sendler wrote the children's real names on slips of paper that she kept at home.

When German police came to arrest her in 1943, an assistant managed to hide the slips, which Sendler later buried in a jar under an apple tree in an associate's yard. Some 2,500 names were recorded.

"It took a true miracle to save a Jewish child," Elzbieta Ficowska, who was saved by Sendler's team as a baby in 1942, recalled in an AP interview in 2007. "Mrs. Sendler saved not only us, but also our children and grandchildren and the generations to come."

Anyone caught helping Jews in Nazi-occupied Poland risked being summarily shot, along with family members - a fate Sendler only barely escaped herself after the 1943 raid by the Gestapo.

The Nazis took her to the Pawiak prison, which few left alive. She was tortured and was left with permanent scarring on her body - but she refused to betray her team.

"I kept silent. I preferred to die than to reveal our activity," she was quoted as saying in Anna Mieszkowska's biography, "Mother of the Children of the Holocaust: The Story of IrenaSendler."

Zegota, an underground organization helping Jews, for which she worked at the time, paid a bribe to German guards to free her from the prison. Under a different name, she continued her work.

After World War II, Sendler worked as a social welfare official and director of vocational schools, continuing to assist some of the children she rescued.

Sendler's daughter once told the AP that during her childhood, the family house "was always full of people asking for help, chiefly looking for their lost relatives."

In 1965, Sendler became one of the first so-called Righteous Gentiles honored by the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial in Jerusalem for wartime heroics. Poland's communist leaders at that time would not allow her to travel to Israel; she collected the award in 1983.

Despite the Yad Vashem honor, Sendler was largely forgotten in her homeland. Only in her final years, confined to a nursing home, did she finally become one of Poland's most respected figures, with President Lech Kaczynski and other politicians backing a campaign that put her name forward for the Nobel Peace Prize.

That effort came after her name was brought to the world's attention in 2000 by a group of U.S. schoolgirls from Uniontown, Kan., who wrote a short play about her bravery based on historic records called "Life in a Jar."

It went on to garner international attention, and has been performed more than 200 times in the United States, Canada and Poland.

Sendler, born Irena Krzyzanowska, was 2 when her family moved from Warsaw to nearby Otwock, where her father, a doctor, directed a spa hospital. He died of typhoid fever in 1917.

Sendler said she lived according to her father's teachings, arguing that "people can be only divided into good or bad; their race, religion, nationality don't matter."

Before the war, she married Mieczyslaw Sendler, but they divorced when the war was over.

She then married another underground activist, Stefan Zgrzembski, and they had two sons and a daughter. One of the boys died a few days after birth. The second son, Adam, died of a heart failure in 1999.

Sendler is survived by her daughter and a granddaughter.

Irena set the perfect example of Christ like love. She was willing to surrender her soul in behalf of many. Admirable indeed. My prayer is that her example resonate within the hearts of us who are alive and can show this manner of love. Until the day Our Father calls her name may comfort come by remembering and honoring her legacy.

What a beautiful lady and a wonderful soul. A friend asked if she was a relative of mine as our similarities as she put it were uncanny. Unfortunately, I checked my family tree on ancestry and have no connection with Irena. May Irena be dancing with the angels and reunited with some of the children she saved. Rest in peace, Irena.

I could not have exhibited your courage of saving babies and children in sacks and coffins from the Warsaw Ghetto during WWII. The beatings you were forced to endure at the Nazis hands and survived only to be sentenced to death by firing squad, all because you saw starving children and wished to save them. But you were not to die that day for saving over 2,500 children that you smuggled out of that "Hell on Earth".
Because you lived, they too lived. What a wonderful thing to do for the worlds smallest human beings. Now you can rest with those dear people of Heaven that you tried so hard to save, knowing that your memory will never be forgotten!

I have been so deeply moved by the story of this woman's life. It has been only a short time ago that I became aware of her and of the way that the Lord used her in His service. I can hardly wait to get to heaven and meet this kind soul. My mothers parents came to the U.S. from Poland and I have never felt more more blessed as I do now about that fact. I will be watching the movie that is going to be on tv about this great woman of faith. As far as I am concerned, the Nobel Peace Price belongs to her.

What a wonderful woman. How can anyone not admire her. So much love and dedication to what she thought was right. Her courage was absolutely amazing. To the family and friends of Irena Sendler,

Like most who have written, I had never heard of Irena until I was blessed to stumble upon her obituary. What an honor it must have been to know her. One can see not only sweetness, but also humility, determination, and Holiness radiating from her face through her picture. These are the qualities of a SAINT.

Irena was a mother to 3 and a grandmother to 1. But like Mother Theresa, she was really a mother and grandmother to thousands and thousands of people. It's interesting that Irena's name comes from the Greek word for PEACE (IRENI). Perhaps her parents knew the person she would become.

I agree that a major motion picture like "Schindler's List" should be made about Irena's life and work (perhaps "Irena's Children"). As many people as possible should know her story. Maybe Steven Spielberg will be inspired to create such a film.

Irena has entered into her reward. May she rest among the saints, where there is no pain, sorrow, or suffering. May her memory be eternal! (Taken from Eastern Orthodox Christian memorial hymns.)

I am deeply sadden by Irena Sendler death. She was kind of hero, our world would forget, if not effort and dedication to present “Life in a Jar” play and carry this for so many years by few nice kids and their teacher. We all need to remember, that the most precious value on this earth is human life! Ms Sendler knew this by heart and inspite of atrocity of her time she was not scared and did not pass by quietly, when saw tragedy of others. She was a woman of action! Remember: numbers do not lie and result of her action was: 2500 human lives saved! She did not boast about it, but thanks to the cast of "Life in a jar" this number is now known. She did not leave this world, until again saw in Warsaw her "actors" from Kansas (May 3rd 2008). Thanks God she survived Gestapo's interrogations, others did not, example: Henryk Slawik, credited with the rescue of 5,000 Polish Jews from certain death, was himself tortured and later died by execution in the Mauthausen concentration camp in August 1944. We need to know about people like Irena Sendler.
In today's unstable world we need such people,we can learn from them and call them angels among us!

Like many people I had never heard of this amazing lady and her extraordinary life until her photo, which captures her sweet and gentle nature, caused me to read further. That expression has but a hint of the strength and courage, faith and hope that made her the woman she was. I suppose it's impossible to number the descendents of the children she saved during WW2 who are alive today because of this lady. Each of us owes her a debt of gratitude, and we should be thankful that we have been able to learn something of her amazing, eventful life and all it contained. This unique and very special lady has now gone from our world, but her story will continue to inspire people around the globe. I'm certain that the world has lost a unique individual but we are the better for knowing her story. My sympathy goes to her daughter and grand daughter who will miss her loving presence in their lives but they have inherited a most wonderful legacy in the memories of their loved one, and I hope that the love and affection of many people will sustain them.
