Gregory Peck Obituary

Published by Legacy.com on Jun. 12, 2003.
LOS ANGELES – Gregory Peck, the lanky, handsome movie star whose long career included such classics as "Roman Holiday," "Spellbound" and his Academy Award-winner, "To Kill a Mockingbird," has died, a spokesman said Thursday. He was 87.

Peck died overnight, Monroe Friedman told The Associated Press.

Peck's craggy good looks, lanky grace and measured speech contributed to his screen image as the decent, courageous man of action. From his film debut in 1944 with "Days of Glory," he was never less than a star. He was nominated for the Oscar five times, and his range of roles was astonishing.

He portrayed a priest in "Keys of the Kingdom," combat heroes in "Twelve O'Clock High" and "Pork Chop Hill," Westerners in "Yellow Sky" and "The Gunfighter," a romantic in "Roman Holiday." His commanding presence suited him for legendary characters: King David in "David and Bathsheba," sea captains in "Captain Horatio Hornblower" and "Moby Dick," F. Scott Fitzgerald in "Beloved Infidel," the war leader "MacArthur," and Abraham Lincoln in the TV miniseries "The Blue and the Grey."

Peck's rare attempts at unsympathetic roles usually failed. He played the renegade son in the Western "Duel in the Son" and the infamous Nazi doctor Josef Mengele in "The Boys from Brazil."

Offscreen as well as on, Peck conveyed a quiet dignity. He had one amicable divorce, and scandal never touched him. He served as president of the Motion Picture Academy and was active in the Motion Picture and Television Fund, American Cancer Society, National Endowment for the Arts and other causes.

"I'm not a do-gooder," he insisted after learning of the Academy's Jean Hersholt humanitarian award in 1968. "It embarrassed me to be classified as a humanitarian. I simply take part in activities that I believe in."

Peck died at his Los Angeles home overnight, with his wife, Veronique, at his side, Friedman said.

"She told me very briefly that he died peacefully. She was with him, holding his hand, and he just went to sleep," Friedman said. "He had just been getting older and more fragile. He wasn't really ill. He just sort of ran his course and died of old age."

During his first five years in films, Peck scored four Academy Award nominations as best actor: "Keys of the Kingdom" (1944), "The Yearling" (1946), "Gentleman's Agreement" (1947), "Twelve O'Clock High" (1949).

"Gentleman's Agreement," in which he played a magazine writer who poses as a Jew to expose anti-Semitism, was considered a daring film in its time. Peck commented in 1971 that his agent cautioned him: "You're just establishing yourself, and a lot of people will resent the picture. Anti-Semitism runs very deep in this country."

Peck ignored his advice. "Gentleman's Agreement" proved a moneymaker and won the Oscar as best picture.

The actor listed "Gentleman's Agreement" among his favorites of his movies. The others: the sea adventure "Captain Horatio Hornblower"; "Roman Holiday" in which he played a reporter to Audrey Hepburn's princess; "The Guns of Navarone" ("good, all-out entertainment, though it's really a comedy"); and "To Kill a Mockingbird."l

His 1962 Oscar winner cast him as Atticus Finch, a small-town Southern lawyer who defies public sentiment to defend a black man accused of rape.

"I put everything I had into it — all my feelings and everything I'd learned in 46 years of living, about family life and fathers and children," he remarked in 1989. "And my feelings about racial justice and inequality and opportunity."

In 2003, an American Film Institute listing of the top heroes in film history ranked Peck's Finch character as No. 1.

In his 60s and 70s, movie roles grew sparse. He appeared as a U.S. president in "Amazing Grace and Chuck" (1987), maverick author Ambrose Bierce in "Old Gringo" (1989) and as a humane company owner victimized by a hostile takeover in "Other People's Money" (1991).

In 1993 he starred in a TV movie, "The Portrait," with Lauren Bacall, his co-star of "Designing Woman" (1957), and his daughter Cecilia.

A 1998 TV miniseries version of "Moby Dick" cast Peck in the small role of the preacher Father Mapple. He had played the protagonist, Ahab, in the 1956 film version.

"I'm working as much as I like," he commented in 1989. "I don't want to do, if I can avoid it, anything mediocre. It's kind of unseemly at my age to come out in a turkey."

Peck's lonely, disjointed childhood was the kind that often contributes to the making of actors. He was born Eldred Gregory Peck on April 5, 1916, in La Jolla, Calif. "My mother had found 'Eldred' in a phone book, and I was stuck with it," he said.

The mother was a lively Missourian, the father was a quiet druggist, son of an Irish immigrant mother. His parents divorced when their son was 6. His next two years were divided between them, then he spent two years with his maternal grandmother in La Jolla. At 10 he was shipped off to a Roman Catholic military academy in Los Angeles where he was indoctrinated by "tough Irish nuns and square-jawed ROTC officers."

Peck majored in English at the University of California at Berkeley and rowed on the crew. One day he was accosted by the director of the campus little theater who said he was looking for a tall actor for an adaptation of "Moby Dick."

"I don't know why I said yes," he recalled in a 1989 interview. "I guess I was fearless, and it seemed like it might be fun. I wasn't any good, but I ended up doing five plays my last year in college."

Dropping the name of Eldred, he headed for New York after graduation with $195 in his pocket. He studied with Sanford Meisner and Martha Graham, worked as a barker at the 1939 World's Fair and as a tour guide at NBC. After summer stock and a tour with Katherine Cornell in "The Doctor's Dilemma," he made his Broadway debut is the lead in Emlyn Williams' "Morning Star."

A half-century later he remembered opening night:

"In the dressing room I gave myself a kick and said, 'Get out there!' I was jittery for the first five minutes, and then I wasn't jittery anymore. You can die up there and say, `Call it off, give 'em their money back and let 'em go home.' Or you can collect yourself and do it."

The play flopped, but Peck's performance brought interest from Hollywood. He accepted a modest film, "Days of Glory," a story of Russian peasants during the Nazi invasion, mostly to use the $10,000 salary to pay off his dentist and other creditors. Then Darryl Zanuck offered him "Keys of the Kingdom."

Soon Peck was under non-exclusive contracts to four studios; he refused an exclusive pact with MGM despite Louis B. Mayer's tearful pleading. With most of the male stars absent in the war, the studios desperately needed strong leading men. Peck was exempt from service because of an old back injury.

A Roosevelt New Dealer, Peck campaigned for Harry Truman in 1948 "at a time when nobody thought he had a chance to win." He continued championing liberal causes, producing an anti-Vietnam War film in 1972, "The Trial of the Cantonsville Nine" and helping the campaign against the nomination of Robert Bork to the Supreme Court in 1987.

Rumors arose periodically that Peck planned to run for office. They started when Ronald Reagan defeated Edmund G. "Pat" Brown for governor of California in 1966. Brown cracked: "If they're going to run actors for governor, maybe the Democrats should have run Greg Peck."

"I never gave a thought to running," Peck always replied. "Not even in my heart of hearts do I have an ambition to do that."

Peck married his first wife, Greta, in 1942 and they had three sons, Jonathan, Stephen and Carey. Jonathan, a TV reporter, committed suicide at the age of 30. After their divorce in 1954, he married Veronique Passani, a Paris reporter. They had two children, Anthony and Cecilia, both actors.

THANKS, for showing the world what real acting is. A man who was good looking, intelligent, and soooooo debonair. It was no mistake his skills produced an impeccable actor. It didn't matter that most of the TV movies you were in back then were in black & white, when you came on the screen everything was in color. One's brilliance will never be duplicated, not then and not now!!THANK YOU FOR SHARING YOUR GIFT.....YOU ARE TRULY MISSED...MANY BLESSING

I have re-discovered "To Kill A Mockingbird" and it has toched my heart because of Gregory Peck's tremendously moving and compassionate portrayal. He has always, to me, come across as a kind, empathetic man of integrity and a strong sense of what is right and fair. He is missed. There is no one like him and it is not only film's loss, it is the world's loss as well.

For Gregory...

WEEP NOT FOR ME

Do not weep for me when I no longer dwell among the wonders of the earth; for my larger self is free, and my soul rejoices on the other side of pain...on the other side of darkness.

Do not weep for me, for I am a ray of sunshine that touches your skin, a tropical breeze upon your face, the hush of joy within your heart and the innocence of babes in mothers arms.

I am the hope in a darkened night. And, in your hour of need, I will be there to comfort you. I will share your tears, your joys, your fears, your disappointments and your triumphs.

Do not weep for me, for I am cradled
in the arms of God. I walk with the angels, and hear the music beyond the stars.

Do not weep for me, for I am within you;
I am peace, love, I am a soft wind that caresses the flowers. I am the calm that follows a raging storm. I am an autumns leaf that floats among the garden of God, and I am pure white snow that softly falls upon your hand.

Do not weep for me, for I shall never die, as long as you remember me...
with a smile and a sigh.

Dear Mr. Peck,

I was sad to hear about your passing. You were a great actor and I loved your movies. When I worked at Valley Presbyterian Hospital in Van Nuys as a radiology transcriber, I transcribed your spine x-ray. I went to the floor you were on and found that you were already discharged. I was thrilled to have transcribed your x-ray report. You will always be missed.

To the Peck family I give my condolences.

At the time of his death, one of the news magazines published a wonderful remembrance of Mr. Peck. It ended with a paraphrase from "To Kill a Mockingbird" after he'd lost his case and the court had emptied except for the 2nd floor gallery still filled with the black residents of that little Southern town. As he began to walk down the aisle to leave, an old patriarch nudged Atticus' daughter Scout and said, "Stand up, your father's passin'"
Gregory Peck made you want to stand up!

Cecilia, Somehow after watching the documentary you did on your dad last night, I think you periodically would check on his guest book, just for one more comment on that special man. I know he has been gone several years, our memories of him will live on forever. I just wanted to tell you that scene in which he holds your son in the hospital touched my heart so. He didn't need to speak at all....you could look into his eyes and see all the emotions he was feeling. What a grandpa that little fellow had. I hope you, your mom and the other children are doing well.

I'm sitting here watching a documentary on Gregory Peck view the clips of various times in his and his families life. I am now 47 years of age and am still moved at the sight of this great man. I grew up an avid film buff. I miss the days of Gregory Peck and those wonderful movies that told the tales of times before me. The Guns of Navarrone - To Kill a Mocking Bird - Gentlemen's Agreement films that had a story, a moral display of human kindness, morality, intergrity, principal, lessons of life and love - we took those characters and words and incorporating those into who we are today. I can't help but to watch this docuentary and my eyes filling with the sadeness and I can't stop the tears from running down the checks of my face as I remember the memories and feelings evoked from this great and wonderful man. We didn't just lose a great actor but a great human being and humanitarian and icon of goodness and righteousness. I guess people would just few me as a silly fan but it was those people like Gregory Peck that made a mark on the world and impressions on millions and generations that come after him and all those great entertainers who helped to shape the generations ahead. I only wish to express my great sadness and sorrow to the Peck family not only did you lose a great man but a great father. God Bless you all.

I got to know Greg Peck when he came to speak in Ann Arbor in 1999. His father, of the same name, had graduated here ( U of M) in 1909 and been a member of the 1909 basketball team and a 'reserve' on the 1908 football team. I got Greg a xerox copy of a picture of his father on the football squad ( I am the world's leading expert on U of M football history) which he had never seen, leaving it at the hotel I figured he would be at, with a note and business card. The next afternoon his secretary called me up and asked where I had gotten the picture, could he get a nice copy of the picture, I said of course, then she said-thrill of thrills-- "Just a minute, Mr. Peck would like to speak to you" . He said "Hello, this is Greg Peck speaking" we talked, I told him about his father's coming back to campus not long before his death in 1962. Greg asked me if I was going to hear his talk at the Power Center for the Arts that night, I said I was going to meet a beautiful blonde german woamn a little later that evening nearby, he said " maybe you could get her to come earlier to my show ?" I replied that I probably couldn't get tickets, he said "Don't worry, there'll be tickets in your name at the Box Office--and maybe we could meet backstage-". I called up Andrea and said "I just got off the phone with my pal, Gregory Peck" she said "Get out of here"--and we made a mad scramble to get to the show on time ( first I had to stop at Kaliedascope Bookstore in Ann Arbor to buy some old Life Mags with Greg on the cover) and got the the show on time, Greg left us the best seats in the house. After the show we headed backstage, there was a huge line, I mentioned my name to the guard holding them all back, he said "MacGregor--this way" at the next post the guard yelled "MacGregor's coming thru"we got to his room and had a great time, he was every inch the gentleman. He talked( It was my first date with this great looking German Woman)with us for 15 minutes while everyone else had to stand and watch. I gave him an extra copy of his Dad's Michigan yearbook, he turned right to a page with a picture of his father on it, Andrea said " He looks just like you!" Greg signed some Life Magazines from 1947 and 1950 with his picture on the cover for us,finally we had to leave, Greg kissed Andrea's hand and said "Andrea, you are everything Bob said you would be" and we left, I told Andrea "Don't expect little treats like this all the time" she said "What did you tell him about me?" I said I was bringing along this beautiful blonde German Woman with the best legs in the midwest", She said she could handle that. Not bad having Gregory Peck put in a good word for you on your first date, eh?

Later Greg sent her flowers, and would call me up at work and chat, I mailed him stuff about his father's Michigan days here.He was facing his own mortality and wanted to find out more about his father's early days. He was a great guy, just like you would expect from his movies, 'Lincolnesque' is the most accurate way to describe him. This story has been written up twice in SGI publications, once in 1999, again not long after 'Greg' died.

Mr. Peck, as a child I fell in love with your look, and your talent after watching, "To Kill A Mockingbird Bird." I thought who is this white man so kind, so fine, who appeared to be a great dad willing to lose it all for this black man? To The family and friends of Gregory Peck. We were sorry to hear of your loss. Gregory did a stellar performance as Atticus Finch which made "To Kill A Mockingbird" one of our favorite movies among others

we hope that the following poem will be of some comfort to each of you.

Eternal Life

By; Charles G. Turner, Sr.

When our earthly life is gone

It goes into an eternal rest

Because our time here on earth has been justly spent

To our life here on earth we’re born

After this we learn to deal with toils and strife

When our life ‘s work on earth is done

It’s God’s will and he says ‘well done”

When we’re in our eternal rest

After living our earthly best

God has taken us from our earthly trials and pain

Then we go to our eternal rest and gain

My heart utterly sinks with an all-consuming grief at this news.

In my life there are few individuals that I can say had as deep an influence on my being. As a young man I had the great fortune to see Mr. Peck in one of his defining roles as an actor, in the classic film, To kill a Mockingbird. At a time when the issues embraced by the story line of this film were seen by many as inflammatory, others shied away from the role as simply to controversial. Gregory Peck did not. To his credit he established the character so very well that all who saw this film at the time were taken aback with the clarity that he brought to these issues of , prejudice, deception, stereotypical labeling of the handicap, racial tension and distrust, and were very daring subject mater of that day. To say these ideas were pivotal in my life and character is to be an understatement to the extreme. Would we only see his portrayal as a romanticism of a fictional character? Yes, if Gregory Peck himself did not go on to exemplify these principles of Fairness, Equality under the law and Justus throughout his remaining life. Could another actor have played the part with the same conviction and intensity? Perhaps, but I feel there are times when all the things are right with the universe to bring about just the right persons, just the right medium, and just the right message. To me, this time, this man, and this message were destined to become!

Gods speed Mr. Gregory Peck. You will be sorrowfully missed.

May you rest in peace. My son is in CA "trying" to become a ROLE model like you. You are one of the few who have always led the way for young aspirants like my son, Bill to emulate. May God hold you in the palm of His hand and may you reach down from heaven above and guide my son in your footsteps.

Until we meet in heaven, I will keep you in my daily prayers.

Peace, love and joy,

A great actor--way ahead of his time. There has not and will not be another movie as great as "GONE WITH THE WIND" and of course there will not ever be an actor as great as Mr.Gregory Peck.

Mr. Gregory Peck will be missed all over the world. He has aspired to be one of the truely great actors of our times. I grew up with two of the truly great classics, To Kill a Mockenbird, and Moby Dick. But the list goes on of the truly great films that Mr. Peck has stared in such as The Boys from Brazeal. May Gods love and mercy be with the Peck family at there time of greaf and sadness.

I met Mr. Peck , his wife and son at the movie premier "MacArthur" here in Dallas. I was his chauffeur for the event. He was as nice a person you will find. He was reserved and very patient. He was dressed very "Ivy" league as I recall. His family was very nice and gracious. This I will always remember as a class act.

I skipped a day of high school classes to watch the filming of the original 'Cape Fear' in Savannah and I was lucky enough to catch a glimpse of the very handsome Gregory Peck, a beautiful Polly Bergen, and a no-nonsense Robert Mitchum during the filming. I wish there had been an opportunity to get their autographs. Whenever I select a movie to watch I always look for the name "Gregory Peck".

How does one give tribute to such a wonderful actor? You were always one of my favorites, my late grandfather resembled you and in my youth I thought you were my grandfather. I was very young!

Your role as Atticus Finch in "To Kill a Mockingbird" will always be my favorite. Much can be said about you. Your life and work say it abundantly. And although you're gone, you'll always be with us in spirit and on the silver screen.

My heart and prayers go out to your family and friends in this time of bereavement.

Offering my deepest condolences to Mrs. Peck and the Peck family.

I am just another ardent fan of Mr. Peck. Gregory Peck truly was my favorite actor of all times. I loved all his films, but the film that especially touched my heart was when he portrayed the priest, 'Francis' in "Keys of the Kingdom". What a wonderful film!

Heaven is lucky to have such a great man. He will be missed by his millions of fans. God Bless!

I wiss miss Gregory,Like Jimmy Stewart,no one will be able to come close to replacing him. When they did their movies they had talent and morals that you sure dont see today. They never took life or their fame for granted. They acted because it was an art to them not a way to get attention,Like I said they cannot be replaced,As the world changes so do the actors and their veiws on what acting should be about.Gregory is one of the good guys that cant be replaced. He is an icon of the movie industry.

what a huge legacy of filmwork mr. peck left for future generations to enjoy!

for a class assignment, my daughter jennifer read to kill a mockingbird and proclaimed that it was (and still is) her favorite book. when she saw the movie, she was even more impressed by the stellar performances, especially that of atticus!!! as a result of our shared love of that one outstanding movie, its exceptional cast of characters and its profound messages, she and i are bonded for life.

my family and i send the family heartfelt condolensces and thanks for sharing such a gifted and talented man with the world. we have all lost a wonderful friend!

Gregory Peck will always be Brigadier General Frank Savage to me, the Air Group Commander whose heroic leadership influenced men to push themselves beyond their limits in war. Also wonderful in "The Yearling" and as Atticus Finch, of course. We will miss him.
