We send our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Dwight Smith. His contributions to the body of western history knowledge will stand as his best memorial.

I regret I was unable to be at Dwight's funeral, but didn't learn of his death until several hours after it was over. Dwight was instrumental in establishing, and then making functional, the Institute of Environmental Sciences, which I directed for a number of years. We maintained contact over the years, although not always frequently. I last saw him in December, 2009, when I took lunch to him, and we talked for several hours. He was sharp as a tack, as always, and had great insights. I prize my acquaintance with him, and the opportunity to work with him. He was a real scholar.

I never met Dr. Smith, but read and re-read many of his edited works on mining in Glen Canyon as I completed my dissertation on Southern Utah environmental history. When circumstances moved me to Central Ohio, I further realized the sheer treasure trove of documents that he left in Special Collections at Miami University, and spent many hours pouring over them. I wish I could have met him. Best wishes to the family, and may you rest in peace, Dr. Smith.

Dr. Smith was one of my best history
professors at Miami. He also sat for
my orals board for my master's
degree. I enjoyed his classes and
was a great teacher. Lots of nice
memories thinking of his teaching. May
he rest in peace.

His senior history class was one of the reasons I decided to become a librarian. He was a great (and tough) historian and professor as well as a great bibliographer.

Cousin Greg & family-Gary & I were very saddened by the loss of Uncle Dwight. He is basking in the glow of our heavenly father and walking the streets of glory with grandpa, grandma, Aunt Jane, my brother Jimmy, and my dad (your uncle) and all the other family members that he spent years researching. Our hearts go out to you. May God bless you and keep you. Love cousin Becki & Gary Sauer
