Allan Williams Obituary

WILLIAMS, Allan Noam "Woodie Allan" 04/01/48 - 06/26/09 Allan died peacefully Friday at home surrounded by family and devoted friends. He had pancreatic cancer. His leaving will be felt deeply across Greater Hartford and beyond by environmentalists, charitable organizations and hundreds of children and young adults who grew up under his tutelage to the outdoors and his motto of generosity: "If I can, I do". Allan grew up in Waban, MA graduating from Newton South High School. He earned a BA in History with honors at Northeastern University and an MA in Geography at University of Rhode Island. He retired after 28 years of dedicated service to the CT Dept. of Environmental Protection (DEP) where he was awarded two Distinguished Service Awards and was credited with being the driving force behind the state's Flood Warning System. In honoring Allan, the DEP Commissioner of the time described him as, "an example of what it means to be an environmentalist." At DEP Allan served in the Natural Resources Center, which later became the Environmental and Geographic Information Center and he founded the DEP Bookstore. Through the Bookstore Allan published award-winning books on natural history and environmental science, including the River Book by James MacBroom. In 1998 Allan was heralded by the Public Broadcasting System as one of the creators of the 1980 Earth Day "Something's Got to Give" Poster Campaign. Although the Campaign was intended as a onetime event, public demand propelled it into a 20-year international project illustrating the environmental impact of 20th Century consumption habits. Allan's passion for environmental causes grew to incorporate the inter-relatedness of issues directly affecting his community. He worked tirelessly as an individual citizen and as a member of various non-profit organizations addressing poverty, mass transit, recreational opportunities for inner city youth, and preservation of and access to our natural areas. Allan was one of the founding members of the Greater Hartford Sierra Club Inner City Outings (ICO) – an outreach and educational organization targeting inner city youth. Through ICO Allan expressed his greatest passion. Leading Hartford area children outdoors, "Woodie Allan," as the children came to call him, introduced them to the love of nature, the sweet taste of birch bark and the meaning of the adiabatic lapse rate. His exceptional ability to engage children through respect, humor and an irresistible enthusiasm for the outdoors produced a generation of nature lovers. Several became the youngest Sierra Club Certified Outings Leaders in the United States. In 2008 Allan received the prestigious Sierra Club Lifetime Environmental Service Award for his dedication to the environment and work with children. It was just one of many awards he received throughout his lifetime. Sensitive to the challenges of sustaining non-profit organizations, Allan returned to school at New York University in 2005 earning certification from the George H. Heyman, Jr. Center for Philanthropy and Fundraising. He founded CTGoodWorks.com, a philanthropic business through which he provided fundraising strategies and philanthropic advice to nonprofit organizations. Allan loved baseball, junk food and corny jokes. He extolled the beauty of the U.S. and hiked in all 50 states. He was passionate for trains. His last venture this past May, accompanied by his beloved nephew Noah, spanned the country from Hartford to San Francisco. Together they rode the Vermonter to Washington, DC, the Capitol Limited to Chicago and the famed California Zephyr to the West coast. Allan is predeceased by his father Harold S. Williams and sister Morissa Williams. He is survived by his mother Esther M. Williams of Waban, MA: brother and sister-in-law Robert and Laura Williams of Ludlow, VT; sister Rebecca Butler of Waban, MA; nieces and nephews Clarissa Butler, Matthew Nidek, Rachel Nidek, Steven Williams, Lynn Williams and Noah Brakel Williams; many cousins and a wide circle of remarkable friends. The Williams family is grateful to Masonicare Hospice and Allan's many friends for their selfless caregiving and support that could only be inspired by so generous a person as Allan. Internment is at Cedar Hill Cemetery in Hartford on Wednesday July 1st. Arrangements and scheduling are being coordinated by Weinstein Mortuary http://www.weinsteinmortuary.com/. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Masonicare Partners Home Health & Hospice, 111 Founders Plaza East Hartford, CT 06108; or The Railroad Museum of New England , PO Box 400, Thomaston, CT 06787-0400.

I knew Al in the graduate geography department at URI. With other like-minded people, we spent some weekends hiking southern sections of the Long Trail in Vermont. He was knowledgeable about the botanical as well as the geographic surroundings. Most importantly, with his corny sense of humor Al Williams was such a fun person to be with. It's people like Al who make this world liveable.

Allan's spirit and energy live on in the ideas he shared with others. I just heard the sad news, but am heartened that he enabled so many to continue the good fight of personal growth and selfless giving. He was a friend and a co-worker many years ago, in the Connecticut chapter of my life. How appropriate that Allan would become even busier as a result of "retiring." May we all still hear his laugh, and smile.

Allan was a unique man with so many different qualities, the greatest which was love for others. Allan and I met in the early days of Hartford Sierra Clubs' Inner City Outings (ICO). We spent years working on developing that program of which without Allan's continual support it would not be in existance today. Allan, you were and and will continue to be an inspiration to so many of us.

In North Carolina on a motorcycle trip, surfing the net for CT bicycling news, I read of Allan's passing. I've known Allen for 30 years, as a West End neighbor, bicycle rider, hiker and outdoor enthusiast. I had the pleasure of hiking part of the Long Trail 30 years ago with Allan, and over the years it was always a pleasure to run into him. He was always happy to see me, eager to share what was going on in his life. I feel such a great sadness with this news and send my sincere condolence to Allan's family and friends.

Allan was a good friend and inspiration, and I will miss him and his enthusiasm for his many causes, his signature quirkiness, and his dry wit. I was proud to have been his one-time partner on his quest to hike in 50 states. In July, 1987, Allan and I met in Anchorage - he by train, and I by plane. For three weeks we trekked around AK, Yukon, and BC, visiting Denali, hiking the Chilkoot trail, standing by Lake Labarge in the midnight sun, driving the road to Tok, and spending days in the wilds of Denali. It was an unforgettable trip.

I have many slides of that trip buried deep in my archives, and will make it a priority to scan them and pass them on to Allan's family.

Allan touched so many lives and will be greatly missed by so many of us. I got to know him well as a founding member of the Central Connecticut Bicycle Alliance and as the event coordinator for the first Discover Hartford Bicycling and Walking Tour in 2007. He had so much energy and enthusiasm for the things he believed in! He was a wonderful teacher and mentor, so generous with his thoughts and ideas. His dry wit and sense of humor will be missed as well. Thank you Allan - we are all better people because of you.

Allan once told me that indifference is the greatest challenge the world will face. He lived his life as an engaged activist; a man of many talents who unselfishly shared his gifts with others. He could make a complicated situation appear simple. He had vision but more importantly, he always created a path of stepping stones to get where he wanted to go and encourage and inspire the rest of us to come along for the ride.

I first met Allan when he volunteered as a camera operator and producer at West Hartford Community Television. He shared his passions for cycling and the environment by developing shows. Whenever, we called he would come and help...even if it was just to change a studio light bulb.

My husband Jim and son JP came to know him through a shared passion for trains. One of those convergences in life when you realize it's such a small world.

He touched our lives on so many levels. We will remember him always.

I will miss him so much.
He showed me how to hike, cave, camp, fish....lots of things.
He basically change my life.
Every since I met him, my life revolved around doing new things, actually expiriencing life.
If it weren't for him, I whould have never lead a hike up Mt. Pierce.
Because of him, I've done great things.
Allan was a great man, who did great things.
I hope that one day, I can come close to the type of person he was. And when that happens, to know he's somewhere, telling a corny joke full pride for what I've accomplished.

The world lost a true star. I will miss Allan. But most importantly I will remember Allan by contributing to my community therefore creating positive impacts however small to the world.

I remember the first day I met you. I seen the picture of our first trip together to today at Monica's house. I remember the water bottles you brought us n the jokes you used to tell. I will never forget all those moments we had. You teaching me about different plants and hiking locations. Teaching me how good it feels to give back to your comunity. Your a great man I will always keep your special teachings close.

Volunteer and like you always wanted (soon to be) Leader of ICO,

Allan was one of the classiest acts I've ever seen. I got to know Allan well while helping him work on the first Discover Hartford Bicycling and Walking Tour in 2007. Allan conceived and planned virtually the entire event, which would raise bicycling and community spirit to a new level in Greater Hartford. Allan was a great man with exceptional vision, intelligence, passion, dedication and a sense of humor. I am forever a better person from knowing and working with him, and am honored he was my friend.

If more people were like Allan, the world would be a far better place. An exemplary human, we shall miss very much. He will continue to be an inspiration to all of us.
