Maria,I did not know of your Father's contribution to Mambo music until I watched the American Masters special about him,oh what a humble and talented man he was.I also lost a great man,my Father so I know your pain.I just had to look up his obituary and express to you my deepest regrets and sympathy.I like what you said in the interview, you think of him every morning and each night, likewise I think of my Dad.What an honor to have had him as your father, may you find peace in knowing that his life made so many other people happy and I can promise you this,I will never forget your Father after watching his life's story, what an honor.

Cachao strummed his bass, at five in the afternoon! The drums beat in rhythym to the Maestro, at five in the afternoon! The people tapped their feet and sang, at five in the afternoon! The Maestro fell silent, at five in the afternoon. His bass strings are plucked no more at five in the afternoon. The mourners lined the sidewalk, at five in the afternoon! His legend lives on, at five in the afternoon! Somewhere a child practices his bass, at five in the afternoon!

Cachao y mi musica cubana me ayuda apreciar a Cuba.

As the daughter of a Cuban singer, I had the privilege of growing up listening to good Cuban music. My mother, Dinorah Napoles, "La Cancionera Azul", who passed away 4 years ago, always talked about Cachao and his music, but mostly, about what a humble person he was! My son, who was born in Miami bought all his "jam sessions and descargas" cd's. The great maestro will be missed, like Celia and so many others who have passed away in exile. I feel very sad today and cried a lot listening to Andy's eulogy. Andy gave Cachao the respect and recognition he deserved. Cachao and his music will live on in our hearts and we must carry on his legacy to future generations of Cuban Americans.

Gracias Maestro. Your music is one of the greatest links to Cuba's vibrant past. My father and I will always treasure the concert you were part of at the Knight Center to promote "The Lost City" in 2006. it was truly historic a once in lifetime event. You, Generoso Jiménez and all the Cineson All Stars brought the house down! And we are so thankful for the chance to meet you at Cuba Nostalgia in 2007. You were so warm and welcoming with your wide smile. Gracias Maestro for your amazing music, that will live on longer than any of us.

Cachao, we have lost a great musical genius but also a kind, beautiful and gentle soul. As a little girl I watched you play with my father, Tany Gil, who loves you like a father, when you were recording Walpataca. Little did I know I was in the presence of such greatness. I will always remember you with great fondness. You were the same person whether you were playing at Carnegie Hall or at a wedding in Little Havana. You were the true essence of Grace. My deepest sympathies to the Lopez family. You have no idea how many lives Cachao blessed just with his presence and kindness. He will live in our hearts forever. God bless you all during this difficult time.
Also, we should be forever grateful to Andy Garcia for all that he did to make the world take notice of the greatness of our Maestro, Cachao.

" King of the Mambo" Maestro de los Maestros thank you for giving so many musicians the opportunity to pass thru that wonderful school of Cuban music that included Danzon, Descarga, Mambo and so much more. You did not discriminate when choosing your bandmates. They were of all nationalities, color and sizes. There were well known familiar names and then some young not so well known musicians among them. I was of the last mentioned group. Just a young fan of the Descargas in Minature living out a dream. A dream that never saw me playing on the same stage where Guillermo Barrettto or Orestes Vilato stepped foot on.But you made it happen for me my musical father. On behalf of all the people who had their dreams become reality because of your kindness I Thank You. Cachao you live in my heart forever. Descansa ahora Maestro.

In 1994 I got a call to be part of a recording at a studio
called the Record Plant. When I got there the producer was the
actor/musician Andy Garcia, and the arranger, composer and artist was
none other than Cachao. Needless to say I was privileged and honored
to be there making music with one of my heroes. We spent an entire
week recording what became the Cachao's "Master Sessions" Volumes One
and Two. I remembered that on that week most of the amazing bass
players in Los Angeles came by the recording studio to pay their
respects to Maestro Cachao and thus I started a personal and working
relationship with him on tours, recordings and movie soundtracks.
Although when I met him he was already in his mid seventies, he was
as energetic as a seventeen year old especially on stage and with the
contrabass in his hands. He was the most affable person that I've
know, always had something positive to say about everyone and he said
it with a smile. He also always had a joke to tell you, he'd call me
by my last name `Almario', come and listen to this one and had me and
everyone else laughing our hearts out.
I'm extremely blessed to have had his friendship in my life.
One of the last concerts that I played with him was of all places in
the Caribean coast of Colombia in 2006 at the Barranquijazz Festival
in my home country, where the audience gave him a standing ovation
after the very first song and they were on their feet for the rest of
the concert.
Like the title of the beautiful and important documentary produced by
Andy Garcia about Cachao's life and music: "Cachao, Como Su Ritmo No
Hay Dos".
I'm forever grateful and forever will miss you.

Cachao leaves with us a legacy of extraordinary trendsetting music, and an unequaled example of humanity, that was a gift to all of us, who had the good fortune and honor to experience.
After a lifetime of listening to Cachao’s music and eighteen years of Concerts and records together. I consider our collaboration and friendship one of most important accomplishments of my life. Cachao is our musical father. He is revered by all who have come in contact with him and his music and is referred to simply as EL MAESTRO! He has been honored around the world and has his rightful place in the Smithsonian Institute.
What is one to do know? How does one move forward in the face of such a monumental loss? In the only way that Cachao would want us to. To honor him with the maximum effort to carry out what was most important to him. Which is continue and never abandon the traditions of our music and culture. This is what Cachao was all about and the example that set for us will continue to inspire generations to come.
Maestro, your music has accompanied me all my life and will continue to do so until we meet again. You have been my teacher, and you took me in like a son. So I will continue to rejoice with your music and carry our traditions wherever I go, in your honor.

I had the pleasure and honor of meeting el maestro Cachao in the Barranquijazz 2007 festival which took place in Barranquilla, Colombia last September, I went to the festival as my brother, Al Escobar the Colombian piano player, was honored for his contribution to latin music and his pride in being from Baranquilla. During the time I spent backstage with all the guest musicians, I was humbled by the kindness and humbleness of such a great musician and human being. I have several photos I took of him with my brother, my wife and all of her cousins who were thrilled to meet such a sweet person. Truly he was God's gift to all of us who met him and share his talent. I feel as though I had known him for years. Maestro you earned your spot in heaven.

Cachao, thank you for all of the excellent music throughout the years. As far as cuban artists, you are the most gifted and talented. The sound of your bass gave me goose bumps every time. Your music will always live in all of our hearts. Gracias Cachao "El Rey Del Mambo".
