Shirley Ostrofsky Obituary

SHIRLEY WELCHER OSTROFSKY, passed away on Saturday, February 28, 2009. Shirley was a loving wife, mother and grandmother to four granddaughters. She was born June 25, 1930 in Hot Springs, Arkansas to the late Arthur and Hannah Welcher and is survived by her husband, Dr. Benjamin Ostrofsky. They were married June 2, 1956 in Beverly Hills, California and enjoyed a happy union for fifty-two years. She is also survived by her daughter, Dr. Keri Ellen Pearlson and her son-in-law, Dr. Yale Pearlson of Austin, Texas and her son, Marc Howard Ostrofsky and his wife Beverle of Houston, Texas, and her four lovely granddaughters, Hana Pearlson, Tracy Ostrofsky, Kelly Ostrofsky and Shelly Ostrofsky. She is also survived by her brother, Arthur Welcher and his wife Diane of San Diego, California. Mrs. Ostrofsky attended Hot Springs High School and Stephens Women's College. She lived a very full life and was always looking for reasons to give away See's Candy, flowers or gift baskets, and finding any reason to read the Daily Racing Form and then go to the Horse Track or spend time in Las Vegas. Prior to being married, she lived in Hollywood and loved to be an extra in the movie business. She was friends with many starving actors and actresses who later became famous. She could often be seen cooking meals for them in her apartment. She loved to swim, play mah jong, shop, bake cookies and her famous cheesecakes. Her favorite pastime was spending time with her granddaughters. She was a member of the Memorial Woman's Club of Houston and was a member of the Pine Forest Country Club for 20 plus years. She was very outgoing, fun, and always laughing. She had many friends and she would do anything for them - whether they asked for it or not. After her stroke, she became very friendly with her medical assistants Fani and Jessica. The family wants to thank her close friends and especially her doctors for all their help and compassion during her illness. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to: The American Diabetes Association (P.O. Box 11454 Alexandria, VA 22312 or online at www.diabetes.org) or the City of Hope (1055 Wilshire Blvd. Los Angeles, CA 90017 or online at www.cityofhope.org). Funeral Services will be held on Wednesday, March 4 at 3:00 p.m.at Temple Emanuel Memorial Gardens, 8341 Bissonnet, Houston, Texas.

I cleaned their house for many years and we became close friends. We went out to dinner several times and I always tried to help any way I could. I miss them both very much. When the house was sold, I lost touch with Ben.

Dear Ostrofsky Family,
Please accept my condolences on Shirley's passing. I remember Shirley as an active member of Beth Am. She was especially supportive of me when I had my Mah Jongg business in Houston. I have an old MJ set she gave me years ago. Attached to it are warm thoughts of Shirley's generosity.
Sincerely and with sympathy,

Dear Ben, I was very sad to hear of Shirley's passing. I'm sorry I waited too long to come and find you both after you moved. We talked on the phone, but that's not a hug and I surely needed that. She will always stay in my prayers and you also. You both will always be very special to me. We have all lost another star to the heavens.

I know that I am not alone in wanting to share my condolences to the Ostrofsky family. Through my friendship with Marc I came to know Shirley and Ben, and always marveled at the long, good marital relationship and the importance that family played with this family. This family always had a center, and a heart, and now the beat goes on, regrettably without Shirley. She always made me feel welcome, and I grieve at her passing: it was too soon. I take comfort in knowing that her influence in raising her family right will be felt for generations to come.
