Ward Cox Obituary

WARD "WARDO" WILLIAM COX, beloved son, brother, grandson, and friend, died in a tragic accident on the evening of Saturday, the 13th of October 2007, at the age of 16 years. Ward was a junior at St. Thomas High School, but had previously attended Memorial High School. Ward was born to Tim and Anne Cox on the 23rd of November 1990, in Houston, Texas. He was the shining light of his entire family. He was a committed athlete in many sports, including baseball, basketball, and football. He loved his teammates and counted them among his best and most loyal friends. There was spirit and determination in every aspect of his life to be the best he could be. His work ethic and natural leadership were admired by his coaches and teammates alike. With a mischievous grin and a twinkle in his eye, he was famous for his ability to instigate spontaneous fun. His infectious personality touched everyone who met him, young and old alike. He was a blessing. Ward enjoyed summers at Camp Chippewa in Minnesota and family vacations to the A Bar A Ranch in Wyoming, as well as spring breaks in Puerto Aventuras, Mexico. He loved spending time at the family ranch in Hempstead, working and playing with family and friends. Preceding Ward in death are his loving grandfathers, Dr. George Cox and Dr. Bud Morris. They received Ward with open arms. Left behind to cherish his memory are his parents; his three older brothers, Christopher, Curtis, and Timmy Cox; loving grandmothers, Jeannne Morris of Topeka, Kansas and Nancy Cox of Tucson, Arizona; aunts and uncles, Clay and Nancy Cox of Tucson, Arizona, Greg and Nancy Smidt of Houston, Julie and Allan Plourde of Richmond, Virginia, and Tom and Madilyn Morris of Topeka, Kansas; cousins Scout, Lizzie, and Cooper Smidt of Houston, Callie, Casey, and Claire Cox of Tucson, Arizona, Alison Carson, Topeka, Kansas, C.B. McGrath of Durham, North Carolina, Barbara Morris of Chicago, Illinois, Erin Plourde of Richmond, Virginia, Lindsey Plourde of Charleston, South Carolina. A celebration of Ward's life will be conducted at one o'clock in the afternoon on Wednesday, the 17th of October, at Chapelwood United Methodist Church, 11140 Greenbay, in Houston. Immediately following the service, all are invited to join the family for a reception at the church. As a courtesy to those planning to attend the services, Memorial Drive Presbyterian Church has generously offered to provide a shuttle service to Chapelwood United Methodist Church from their parking facility, located at 11612 Memorial Drive (at Blalock). In lieu flowers, contributions in memory of Ward may be directed to the Ward Cox Memorial Fund, St. Thomas High School, 4500 Memorial Dr., Houston, TX 77007; the Camp Chippewa Foundation, 15 East 5th Street, Suite 4022, Tulsa, OK 74103; or to the Chapelwood Foundation, 11140 Greenbay, Houston, TX 77024. The Cox family wishes to thank everyone for all of the love and support they have received from their community of friends that surrounded them during this time. Ward brought joy to us all. He will be missed everyday.

Cox family,
I know I am extremely late on writing an entry in the guest book. But I just came across this today. This goes to show that not a day goes by that I don't think of Ward. Although I only met him one night at homecomming, he most definitely made a huge impact on my life. I remember that entire night as if it was just yesterday, I remember everytime I would look over and see Ward, he was always smiling and was surrounded by many people that were laughing at his jokes. The few conversations we had that night are unforgetable to me, just because everything Ward would say always seemed to make me laugh. I remember the phone call I got from one of his friends the next morning, hearing about what had happend, and it was just so unreal to me. I just didn't want to beleive it. Going to school the next day was hard for me, because all I could think about was Ward, and what pain his family must be going through. My English teacher saw how devistated I was that entire day and asked me to write something about Ward, because I love to write. So I wrote it, and as I was typing every word I just remember tears falling from my eyes. Mr. & Mrs. Cox, you were blessed with an amazing son. I wear Wards bracelet every day and I never take it off, and I wear his shirt all the time. Everytime I look down and see my wrist sporting that W.W.C bracelet, I think of the great person Ward was. I lost my cousin 2 years ago in a traggic car accident and I remember the great deal of pain I was in for so long, and Ward reminded me a whole lot of my cousin when I first met him. When I hear the saying, "Only the good die young", I beleive that is so true, and we will always wonder why that is, but unfortunately I don't think we will ever get the real answer. Ward is in a wonderful place, and I have no doubt in my mind that he is surrounded by all the other angels telling his jokes and that beautiful smile of his isn't coming off of his face. I think if there is one thing we all learned from Ward, it is live life to the fullest and live everyday happily and with a big ole grin on your face. My prayers are with the Cox family always.
